I am sending a "care" package including everything from funky T-shirts, ramen, bondeggi to my friends. It will include about 5 packs of cigs, collected from regions in Asia. Does anyone know if this is illegal, or something? I am not sure what I have to do, if anything, to send cigarettes in the mail. Anyone know? Confused

It's less than a carton of cigarettes (10 packs), so you might be safe, but duty might be placed on the cigs if customs opens the packages.

Haha, the bondeggi is meant as a joke, not for actual consumption!! Cool

The information you seek is in the CBSA website:

http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/import/courier/postal/ind_prohibited-e.html

http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/import/courier/postal/ind_duty_free-e.html

Cigs are subject to excise taxes, provincial sales tax and GST. Depending on the province they are destined for this amount can vary and be up to 20 cents per cigarette plus the $5 handling charge. If the cigs are undeclared and discovered then the whole package is subject to forfeiture and destruction.

The other stuff is duty free if packaged and marked as a gift AND has a combined value of less than $60 CAD.
