Some friends and acquaintances have told me they downloaded some movies or TV shows via torrents, so I went and dowloaded Azureus and BitComet. I don't know if I just chose obscure titles (I don't think so,) but I haven't really been able to download much of anything.
I've got partial downloads on a bunch of different shows, and the download speeds are often only only 1, 2, or 3 kbps, sometimes not even this fast. I was quite disappointed. I did download some linux distros at lightning fast speeds, but nothing much on the tv or movie front.
I'm just curious what client you are all using and if there's something that should be tweaked in settings in order to allow for faster downloads. I am behind a router and a firewall, but I can get high speed on the linux distros, so why not on the TV shows? Are there certain kinds of trackers that work better than others? Or something else altogether?
Any help or comments appreciated. |

You have to tweak the router for bittorrents to work right...at least I did. I'll try to find the information for how I did it.
I switch back and forth between Bitlord and Azureus.
I've found the fastest downloads to be from http://www.tvtorrents.com and http://www.torrentleech.org/browse.php .
You need to register with both of them, so that they can track how much you share - which I think is fair because if you don't share, then you shouldn't be downloading. The 2nd site is generally 3-4 times as fast as other sites that I've found, but they just offered me invitations, so I think the signup might be full.
Look online for router and torrent problems, and I'm sure you'll find it if I don't get back to you first. |

Your router is likely not forwarding incoming traffic requests so other people's computers can't form a connection with you. And if someone else has the same deal, they can't connect with them either.
The easiest way is to lock your local IP on your computer and set the DMZ setting of the router to point to that IP. Problem solved. |

TV Torrents installs spyware/trojans on your machine when you try to download a torrent. Best to avoid this site unless you are using a machine that only downloads things while the rest of your network does not share permissions with it. |

not to mention you should see if you can tell how many seeders/leechers (peers) there are associated with that torrent. If there are no seeders, you'll probably never get it downloaded. If there are only a few seeders, it will be slow.
As far as torrent sites, try www.torrentspy.com or www.thepiratebay.org or for a more complete search, try www.isohunt.com. it searches lots of different databases at once. anyway, just remember to check the amount of peers.
happy pirating
oh yeah, and I am using Shareaza for downloads. |

| Where'd you find the info about spyware and tvtorrents? I've been using it for almost a year, and ad-aware, zone alarm, and spybot SD all tell me that I'm clean. |

Yeah really. My Zonealarm shows no strange apps trying to access the net. If a site as popular as tvtorrents was installing such spyware, the major spyware makers I'm sure would have taken care of this... but my adware never finds anything.
Maybe Gord is thinking of another site. |

When you try to download a torrent for the first time, it won't let you download the torrent until you install their little ActiveX application. If you authorize it, the Microsoft spyware detection tool will kick in and tell you that you're tossing up a known trojan complete with the actual name of the application.
Because it's an ActiveX file that requires your consent, it's not a virus and thus flies in under most virus detection programs, and reports as being part of your browser as far as your firewall is concerned. |

Are you sure you're talking about http://www.tvtorrents.com or http://tvtorrents.com.
The first one is the one that I use, and it's shown the active-x box (not even when I first used it), the 2nd website got shut down a few months ago...
Just curious, since the one I'm using does seem to be on the up and up. |

I use Firefox. Firefox, of course, doesn't use activex. Tvtorrents has never blocked me.
Using the site under IE, however, it warns me:
"To help protect your security, Internet Explorer blocked this site from downloading files to your computer. Click here for options"
The prompt appears to be for the torrent file itself. Looking at my list of IE activex controls, I find nothing added after giving it permission.
Given tvtorrents popularity, surely someone would have detected this spyware addition and commented on it. Could you find something on google to back your claim? |

| I like torrentspy, but it seems to be down right now. I can't get much new on isohunt, either. I hope they haven't been taken down. |

I've been using www.bitmetv.com for a while now, and it's super fast. (episodes of lost in less than half an hour, sometimes under 10 minutes)
you need an invite to use it, but if you're interested, let me know |
