Hi, I want to use one or all of the following in my classes this week: Merry Christmas Charlie Brown , The Grinch.., Simpsons - Christmas Episode, but I am short of ideas on what exercises I can give to the kids to do whilst watching them.

Does anyone have any lesson plans they have used previously they'd like to share?

I thing they are all gap fill and questioned out.

i've used the Charlie Brown in two ways, one is break the class into
teams (i've got 40 kids a class) and assign them a character, then have each team try to remember as many things that the character said during the show. (it hasn't worked as well)

the second is simply playing a small section at a time and then stopping it and asking the kids to explain what just happened. this keeps them involved and they don't get lost.

also, i've found the many levels that is the Charlie Brown christmas special.

How old are the students? The Simpsons Christmas episode is like 50% slang so you should probably steer clear unless they're very high level (or have korean subtitles).

Why not use Merry Christmas Mr Bean...my students love it. Then you can get them to write a small dialogue about a scene.

Mr. Bean rocks!!!! I've used his videos many times and they are very good when working with themes (shopping, parties, cooking etc...). I don't like them myself (my humour is more along the Jewish vein and not slapstick) but they are great class tools.

One way I use them is to have the students in pairs. One student can see , one has their back turned.
A). Students take turns explaining what Mr. Bean is doing. Teacher can add vocab. on the board to help students.
---- I like to do this in class without the video. I am Mr. Has Been and they describe to a partner what I am doing...

B) Same as above but the student who can't see keeps asking, What did Mr. Bean do? or What is Mr. Bean going to do?.......The student watching responds.

Another great way of using these videos is to put the vocab they will "see" on the board. when students hear or see the vocab word, they shout it out. First one gets a point. This can also be expressions....

They can also retell, also list vocab they see.....etc.......

This could all be done in some form with a Christmas video. I used to use "Its a wonderful Christmas " like that....a good flic because it is in easy to manage scenes (part of Capra's mastery, he always built a film, scene by long scene.).
