My school took all the teachers out to dinner last Thursday night for dinner to a nice Korean restraunt. During the course of the dinner and all the shots of soju, a couple of the female Korean teachers kept looking at themselves in the mirrors of their make up compacts. Also taking pictures of themselves with their cellphone cameras. I found this rather humorous and entertaining. Other teachers call it "Princess Disease" Anyone else have these kind of stories? Also there were the ever present shots of soju which were free flowing all night and other drinks after all the school was paying! Well execpt for me I was Santa on Friday and didn't want the kids to have a hung over bleery eyed red nosed Santa Although that might have been interesting. Finally pardon my ignorance where do I find a url link for a Avatar posting Thanks! |

A lot of Korean girls are vain and self-absorbed.
Other fun facts for you:
Koreans eat a spicy pickled cabbage called Kimchee.
Korea has four seasons.
Shoes come in pairs (left and right).
Fire hurts when you touch it.

The self-photography of Korean girls still amuses me greatly. Every time I go to Starbucks, I see at least one table of girls snapping endless photos of each other. When I look through the photos on a K girl's cell phone, there are numerous shots of themselves, doing cutesy poses. The photos are usually so great, and sometimes even make ugly girls look pretty damn good. How do they do that? Every time I take a self-photo, it comes out looking like sh1te. Perhaps I need to practice a few thousands times to find the perfect angle and facial expression.

It's one of my favorite things about the country - you can stand there in front of the big mirror in the subway admiring yourself and doing your hair without feeling embarrassed. Back home, people would be like "get over yourself, you vain idiot!"
Where else in the world could you HOLLER to a female server in her 40s "over here, very pretty young lady! Rice, more, give me!" and still be considered a nice, polite guy? |

Isn't vanity one of the seven deadly sins? Never saw the movie "Seven", but didn't the victim (afflicted by the sin of vanity) get cut up with mirrors or something?
I've found something new to google:
Pride
Sinopsis
What it is: Pride is excessive belief in one's own abilities, that interferes with the individual's recognition of the grace of God. It has been called the sin from which all others arise. Pride is also known as Vanity.
Why you do it: Well-meaning elementary school teachers told you to "believe in yourself."
Your punishment in Hell will be: You'll be broken on the wheel.
Associated symbols & suchlike: Pride is linked with the horse and the color violet.
References
Medieval theologian Thomas Aquinas said of Pride "inordinate self-love is the cause of every sin (1,77) ... the root of pride is found to consist in man not being, in some way, subject to God and His rule."
Here's a quiz to find out which one is your deadliest sin:

I can think of some things about Korean culture that don't jibe with me, but this ain't it. I see it as very harlmess fun. In fact I understand it quite well. I myself, am not very photogenic, its hard to get a good picture of me, though it can happen. I found that once I got a digital camera and practiced taking some self shots and also being photo'd by other more regularly, I got better at getting good shots. Photos are for posterity, and they're fun, why not look your best? |
