Unions' ILO Meet Boycott Could Spell Disgrace for Korea
The damage to the prestige of both Korea's government and labor groups is potentially devastating. The ILO chief on Aug. 18 expressed dissatisfaction in a letter to Korea warning it was "inappropriate to try to link a domestic issue with the international community." The Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU) in statement on Tuesday said, "Our home is broken, so inviting guests would cause an even greater disgrace."

ILO Puts Off Meeting in Pusan
A country where the government keeps suppressing labor is not eligible to host an ILO meeting, KCTU president Lee Soo-ho and FKTU president Lee Yong-deuk said. With the postponement, the 43 participating governments, as well as some 600 guests, are expected to face some inconvenience in schedule changes.

Korea losing bid to become research hub
Bureaucratic inflexibility propels multinationals to set up elsewhere
Several government agencies have been trying over the past few years to lure foreign research and development operations to Korea, sometimes in competition with each other. Those efforts, however, have not proven very fruitful. According to a recent report by the Science and Technology Policy Institute, 209 foreign companies have made some sort of commitment to establish R&D centers here. But 85 percent of those commitments have not translated into researchers in front of microscopes or a transfer of technology here. To add insult to injury, the vast bulk of those companies -- 95 percent -- say they consider Japan or China as better places to set up Northeast Asian operations.
