I need to come up with a first day activity. Its an elementary class, mixed level, 35-40 students!!!! I'm thinking about doing some sort of name game/name tag activity.. no way I'm going to be able to remember all those names!! It's been some time since I've taught in an elementary school!!!
Anybody want to share some ideas????????
~thanks

Here's what I'm doing. It's something I adapted from an idea submitted here by Derrek, I believe.
Write sentences like these on the board:

My favorite food is ___________. (manlyboy)
My favorite drink is ____________. (manlyboy)
I like __________ flavored ice cream. (manlyboy)
I don't like to eat ___________. (manlyboy)
My favorite fruit is ___________. (manlyboy)

Ask students to guess what your answers are. Whoever guesses correctly gets a candy. Drill the sentences.

Hand out 5 slips of paper to each student, and have them write down the sentences with their own answers. Make sure they write down their name in English at the end of each sentence.

When finished writing, have them scrunch up the papers into "snowballs". Then, let them go wild for a minute or two having a snowball fight.

Finally, instruct them that they have to retrieve all five of their papers. Demonstrate by picking a few up. Read the name out loud. Find that student. Hand them the paper. Make sure they understand that when they pick up a paper, they must return it to its owner by calling out his or her name.

I usually do a running dictation about me, It gets them all moving around, uses the four skills and they fins out lots of information about me. Maybe you could have a small prize for the winning pair.
