I swear that I use more paper than the rest of my high school staff of 30 put together. Usually the majority of stuff in the recycling box is mine. I don't use textbooks and like to use handouts for everything. I don't give a damn about copyright and will photocopy whole chapters from books. So far nobody has said anything about it, and I think that some of the teachers are impressed when they see me staying late or see that I've come in early to make handouts. I try to use both sides of the paper when I can, but I still must average about 1,000 pieces of paper a week, and must use more than that some weeks. How about you?

I go through about half what you do. I hand larger runs over to the office assistant who uses a thinner newsprint-type paper, which is perfectly adequate & maybe saves a tree or two.

Yes, I use a lot of paper too. Way more than the Korean teachers. I don't have a textbook and have to make handouts for all my 23 classes.

I use a small forest. I don't have a text book either. I also use more when I teach adults as I have to cut all those bloody little communicative tasks up. In Vietnam I had an assistant. Smile

Why not just use a textbook?

I probably use about 10k pages a year on handouts. That is considering I use a textbook. The Korean teachers give mad handouts, and tests. They probably use 1k a week easy. To give you a clue, one day I go into the copy room, there must have been 50k A4 white pages. Then 2 days later it was ALL gone. Must have been test/handout week...but that kind of stuff happens once a month or so.

Not possible. I have 23 classes of mixed ability kids. I would be teaching out of three different books at the same time Laughing

How much paper?

Not enough. My goal for 2006 is to persoanlly be responsible for 10% of the total logging in Korea, preferably the non-renewable "big lumber".

Additioanlly, I was recently named "most improved user" by the copier toner society of Korea, and will soon have my name on that golden plate in the "handout king" hall of fame.

Why, if you don't have a textbook, does it have to be all handouts? Why not more communicative-type activities with flashcards or posters? Why not have students copy information off the board?

I'm just throwing out ideas...I am addicted to worksheets myself. I hate for a student to walk out of the classroom with a piece of paper on which it is not immediately obvious what the lesson objectives were. Still...

That would be nice, but I only have each class for 50 minutes each week and try to get as much done as possible. Plus, they don't have notebooks and sometimes we spend 5 minutes making sure everyone has a pen!!!

A worryingly large amount of paper in my case. However, I may pay some of the cost back with the amount of candy I buy from the school candy shop. Very Happy

Kill a forest and make a mother smile is what I say.

They are always happy when little Kelly comes home with reams of handouts all of which have her Engrish scribbles all over it.

Happy mothers keep my pay regular and on-time.

Usually 3~4 squares per swipe multiplied by 3~4 swipes (depending of course on the job at hand Wink ) When it comes to important matters such as this, worrying about the number of trees is the last thing on my mind.

You know it was inevitable.
