hmmmm.....I am sorry but the magic of trot is lost on me. The blue tuxedos have lost their luster. |

I must say that I too have become fond of the ol' 'trot', largely due to my girlfriend's father's obsession with it - he's constantly got it playing whenever I'm 'round their place, but I suppose that's not unlike most other Korean men in their sixties. My fondness however would never constitute me watching inet TV for longer than two seconds. Great fun down the noraebang though. And a foot-tapper in any taxi. |

I have to admit watching the bus driver rock out to it this afternoon was fun. Not only was he singing along, at stoplights he'd kind of bop around in his seat. Nice to see a Korean guy so uninhibited actually |

It must be accepted. They have a hard life. We must allow them their random moments of unkoreanness. |

I really like trot, when I was in Korea I saw some programs on TV that I really liked. For me, blue tuxedos will NEVER lose their luster!
Can you give me any pointers on acquiring trot music as a beginner? Which CDs are essential to a newbie's collection?
I am trying to learn more Korean before my next visit to Korea. I learned Spanish [albeit a much easier language] mostly by listening to mariachi music. When I got to Mexico I couldn't speak spanish worth a darn, but I could SING songs in spanish and the locals liked it enough to include me in their social life.
I am hoping to learn some trot songs that would enable me to actually sing in a noraebang so I can socialize with Koreans. |

My closest female friend's sister was on her way to becoming a Hard Rock/Trot star in Korea about 12 years ago. She was on tv about eight times and put out a CD. Then something happened, and she just quit. My friend won't tell me what, but I am dying to know. |

If you want to know why she didn't want to continue on the road to being a hard rock and ƮƮ star, you should see the korean film "Waikiki Brothers." The musician's life is not an easy one, this 80s nostalgia film reminds me of my several friends from high school and college who didn't outgrow their passion for being in bands.
Did anyone else see the music festival on June 8 in Kumgang Mountain in North Korea? It was broadcast on KBS. I didn't care much for the North Korean vocalists, but the North Koreans had an all-female band that rocked. Sort of a fast-paced band with tight percussion and a really good accordionist. Their music reminded me of Brave Combo, a kickass band from Denton, Texas.
But my wife said that it is just like me to enjoy that kind of dweeby music. |

I, too, would be interested in acquiring some good trot music. I'm in the U.S. now so I do most of my shopping for Asian CDs on YesAsia.com. I like the new singer that sings the "jjak jjak jjak" song (the relatively young one) but surely there are some older trot singers that have more powerful voices. Who are the all-time male and female greats of trot?
I started liking this kind of music when I was living in Japan- Japanese enka is very similar. It, too, is old fart music in Japan, and seen as uncool by younger people, but is experiencing something of a revival as a few young, good-looking people have started to sing these kinds of songs. Enka is very similar to trot, but I would say trot is often more rythmic, and I like that... |

Korea's greatest cultural asset, I submit, is Trot.
Trot rocks!
Trot rules!
That's a bassoon in the background, right? Never mind: the magic will catch whether or not you understand the mechanics of what's being done to you.

1- Trot definitely rocks and rules!
2- When I listen to trot, I get the feeling that there's one Midi keyboard along with one guy or woman with a microphone - and that's it. That's the band. |

If you're talking about a relatively younger singer and newer song, then I'm guessing it's §¥ by (famous for ӳ last year)... She's teh hawt. |

trot music, along with dos tacos in kangnam is the saving grace of the ROK.
but...they jacked trot from the japanese who stole it from someone else.....besides holloring and drum beating a la grand cherokee, i don't think koreans really have a music style to call their own. |
