I am who you talked to and I did not say that looks are the final determinant. I said that they are a factor. Not at every place of employment but many. If you checked the email I sent you I also said that my current university and one of my prior schools have on staff overweight foriegners.
You misconstrued and/or misunderstood what I said. Oh and for the record I have only lived in Korea for 9 years and worked at Universities for 5. |

And you're living proof that looks don't matter. |

| It's not just weight that matters. LG and other big chaebols employ professional 'face readers' on their human relations staff. One of my Korean friends once said that after the age of 12, you are 'responsible' for your face. Hordes of Koreans read faces. Some are extraordinarily good at it. |

| My friend got hired because he "looks like a news anchorman". |

Well, most employers don't take it that far. It's a bit more superficial than that. Besides, reading faces is has accurate as palm reading. Just have a look at Canadian Hell's Angels, many of which dress like bankers and lawyers. I'm sure that the ones who have university degrees could get jobs at Korean universities.
Not convinced yet? Give it a try.

What a debacle! You've got to be joking? Some undoubtedly average looking foreigner -- who's lapping up the "ooh, you so handsome / beautiful" lines like a cat with its nose in a saucer of cream -- told you that you couldn't teach English at their university because of the way you look?
This is not only ridiculous but just another sign that the EFL racket in Korea has been well and truly hijacked by small-minded imbeciles from the West.
Just out of interest, on a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being the highest, how would you rate the looks of the foreigner who told you that you weren't hot enough? |

I was one of the committee members who interviewed Drew for the position. I PM'd him to let him know that none of the members on our committee ever discussed his appearance; it was not part of our hiring criteria. We knew about Drew before he interviewed, as one of our members had met him before. I think he is a very likeable person and is qualified; I would be very happy to have him as a colleague, and I encouraged him to apply when a position here opens again. The reason he was not hired this time was we had many applicants and the admin was allowing us to hire only a very few. I'm not sure who Drew spoke with, but I'm sure it wouldn't have been any of our committee members.

Maybe but universities don't necessarily hire for a proficiency with the English language:
http://www.keone.co.kr/greeting/index04.php
This is plain embarrassing. All these highly lettered people can't craft two error free paragraphs. One guy can't even spell his own name right.
...
I managed to get in touch with of one of the teachers. This clarifies a lot:

Sorry if i don't know who you are. Anyway, in regards to your question, i suspect that the messages were indeed cobbled together by the Korean staff. Most of the message attributed to me is actually mine (though i didn't appreciate having to follow the basic outline they suggested, and the whole idea struck me as foolish anyway). However, the initial phrase under my photo, "Take a enjoy", is ludicrous, and i certainly had nothing to do with that. Arrgh. It makes foreign teachers appear as illiterates. Not good. In any case, due to some bureaucratic malfeasance by local Immigration officials, permission for me to work the camp was retracted, so i never actually worked the camp.

So you decide what parts were Korean "improvements".

Err, mindmetoo, I'm guessing that more than a few of those messages were authored by the Korean staff and not the teachers, e.g.

Gotta love the pics: looks like a quarter of Tyrone's girlfriend's face made it into his, while Joe didn't even bother to crop his girlfriend out all all. Maxwell is looking sharp in his white Kangol... |

| When I read brutally honest posts such as mindmetoo's, I just want to pack up the plantation and bail out of this dead end street. How the hell did I end up working in an "industry" full of deadbeats, bums and losers? On second thoughts, please don't answer that. |

| You think thats bad. Try working in Industry. You havent got a prayer if your looks don't fit the norm. They are at least discrete about it though, and will find carefully worded reason to tell you why you were not hired. |

One of my Korean friends went for a job interview and the male interviewer spent the first few minutes dwelling on how she looked older than her age. This wasn't even for a job with the public... |
