To be honest, the subject is pretty bland (compared to most things here), but I figured it still belonged in the current events forum. But the thing that is funny is, why not just apologize, why promise to apologize?

Colonel Sandurz: That's too early. Prepare to fast-forward!

Now I could go for the quick and dirty reaction to laugh at Canadians but I made a New Year's resolution to not pander to the lowest common denominator nor to start flame wars.
Actually, my question is how important is this head tax and how big of a deal is it? Total curiousity, is it something that is brought up every year, is it a new story, what?
Also, I know someone wants to say it, but yes the United States hasn't apologized for slavery, nor are we offering reparations. I'm not comparing the U.S. to Canada, but would love more information.
(Though to be honest, when you guys sin, it does tend to be over smaller stuff. At least we can say we screw up big time)

Paying a head tax - simply horrific betond description. When White people came to America, we had to murder an Indian. I'd rather pay the tax if I had the choice.

*beep* it I say and leave the past in the past. We don't have head tax any more why dig up old wounds for some political favours.

Certainly not the gravest injustice in Canadian history, but the matter needed to be addressed. In any case, I'm not holding my breath for an appology for the hanging of Louis Riel.

Though I think the head-tax was racist, the immigrant Chinese were not forced to go to Canada if they had not wanted to. An apology is simply there to get more Chinese-Canadians to votes, being that it is done during an election campaign.

This strikes me as a stupid 'issue'. Yes the policy was clearly designed to keep Chinese out of Canada, but that is nothing to apologise for. Any country can determine whatever policies it wants. Not to mention the fact that Canada provides permanent residency for investors in Canada, which is basically a head tax by another name.

The OP needs to fix his hyperlink - it has messed up the formatting on this page.
