I'm not sure about the rest of you, but it worked flawlessly for me. I applied for the F5 on Dec 12th and picked it up on Tuesday, January 2nd. No problems at all, no interview, nothing. My wife went along and we submitted the necessary paperwork (see below). I even got a new ARC card with F5 clearly printed on the front. Now my question is... are we allowed to vote?

Required Documents:
1. passport
2. Alien Registration card
3. Application form (In immigraion office)
4. Copy of wife's family register
5. Bank statement with more than 30,000,000 won.(USD30,000) or contract to rent a house with deposit money / proof of house ownership
6. Fee 50,000 won

Documents from my school:
1. Certificate of employment
2. Guarantee of Identity

That was it... although the new ARC card cost me 10,000 won. Worth it I think.

Hope it works as easily for all of you! Happy New Year!!!

Please fill some of us in on exactly what an F-5 is, and why someone would want it.

Thanks.

It sucks when people come on here and post something but never stay long enough to give any information.

1: What office did they use?
2: Did they call you to pick it up, or did they have a date on the paper?
3: Did immigration explain the visa better?

and many more questions. Suwon has had my application for 7 weeks and still I have no answer.

Sorry, I was busy and not living on Dave's Cool

I went through the Seoul Immigration Office, and yes, they called me to come pick it up. I cannot vote, but I can do any job I want as long as I pay the appropriate taxes, etc. In all other respects I am treated as equal to a Korean citizen.

The differences between this and F2-1...
It does not need to be renewed, and as far as I can tell, I no longer need re-entry visas, etc. The F2-1 is a waiting visa in preparation for the F5. As far as I know, you need to be on the F2-1 for at least 2 years before applying for F5... it is just to make sure you stay married long enough, I guess.

Does a person need to be married to Korean to get an F-5 visa?
I know that is a stupid question, but it defeats the purpose if they are the only people eligible for it.

if so.....oh well.... Sad

Yes, the F5 is the equivalent of an American "Green Card" or the status of a Canadian "Landed Immigrant". One must be married to a national to qualify for it.

If you are not married then, of course, you can always work toward changing your citizenship Shocked

Thanks for coming back and answering the questions. I have been waiting a long time and was wondering about the process.

Do you think the documents are the same for men and women?

I never had to show any financial statements - I wonder if I will need to for an F-5?

I am a woman, just in case you wonder Razz

Heh... the first reply to my post was 7 hours later so I had given up on it. I am sorry if I left you hanging... overall the process was painless.

My wife is convinced that women can automatically qualify for the visa and/or citizenship. As long as your name appears "under" your husband's in the dong-office records then you can get a Korean ID card. I mean it can't be that difficult for the myriad of Vietnamese wife-slaves here so...

Sorry, that was uncalled for and bitter...

I think your comment is OK. Tzechuk's husband keeps her locked up in the house with a digital camera, and forces her to take photos of their baby and surf Dave's all day long.

The terrible, Evil man!

(just kidding). Smile
