Last night all the staff at my school went out for dinner and then to a second location. We all ate samgyepal and then went on to drink soju and beer. I could sense there was something wrong with one of my coworkers... I'll call him M. He looked very angry all night.
Then we all split up and a current coworker, an ex-coworker and myself left to go to the only bar in my little town. On the way I suggested that we call our friend Bill, I didn't have his number but my coworker had it on a piece of paper and held it for me to see and dial.
This is when M showed up and put his face between mine and my cell phone and asked 'What are you doing?" I politely told him it was not any of his business and he lost it!
He started to hit me, pushed me to the ground and hit me again. This guy is 6'6". He's a former US military guy. While he was hitting me he kept on spewing all this talk, like "I know you guys think I 'm a redneck", "You think you're so great". "Don't treat me like a dog" and "I'll beat all three of you up if I have to". One of my friends tried to restrain him but his size made him hard to contain. I tried to talk to him and eventually he got back to his senses and stopped hitting me. Then we walked with him to the bar and I had drinks with him and he said he was sorry.
Today I am not too sure that I want to go into work on Monday and see him. I am not a cry-baby but I feel that I have to tell my director what happened. My coworker who was with me at the time of the incident is also afraid. My knee is pretty bruised up from being shoved to the ground and today I felt like going to the police to press charges for assault.
What should I do? |

Are you male or female? if female, press charges immediately. If male, I don't know. If you don't feel comfortable working with him, try to get him fired. If you tell your boss what happened, He will more than likely fire this guy. But, you may want to have police escort him out
(he sounds like a basket case). |

Why did you do such a thing?
At the very least, you should tell your boss about it. |

Makes me wonder just how much of the story we are missing. Sounds implausable that calling someone else would set someone off like that.
Also that following an 'assault' by a 6'6" guy you would be able to continue on to a bar to have drinks.
Methinks I smell a troll. |

Where did these ideas come from? Is he delusional, or have others been saying/doing things to make him feel this way?
While I don't condone physical attacks, if there has been a history of insults directed toward this guy, then I'm not surprised that being told, "It's none of your business" would set him off, especially after some alcohol has been added to the mix.
I don't think we know enough about the situation to offer judgement. |

It's obvious he wanted to know if the OP was making plans to go drinking elsewhere, and wished to join him. The OP was rude by telling him it was none of his business, as in 'no, never'. So, yes, I would have been offended, too. But knocking someone down? In any case, Pyongshin, you're probably right. Maybe the OP should just drop it and remember next time not to be rude to people, especially if they are huge. |

I'm not trolling. We managed to talk some sense into him while he was busy hitting me, and he calmed down pretty quickly. He was also hitting me with open hands. I never said that he beat the crap out of me, only that he assaulted me. |

| When everyone's sober again you should sit down with your more decent co-workers and explain to him that you'll be civil at work but you're never going to see each other or do anything together outside work. Let him know that the moment he ever lays a hand on one of you in the future you will be calling the police. He should know that he's blown it and does not deserve the company of his co-workers any longer. That kind of behaviour is inexcuseable and you have no need to tolerate it. |

What the hell difference does that make?  Somebody assaults you, you press charges, period. We're not in the schoolyard anymore, people are supposed to be mature adults.
What, if you're male, it's ok for somebody to assault you? What kind of sexist thinking is that? |
