The U.N. security council then Japan, alright, then Canada.... ?
Canada is more powerful than Korea?
There's way more people in South Korea than in Canada.
There's WAY more people and money and weapons in the Korean armed forces than Canada.
Korean outmanufactures Canada a lot (five times more export volume) but Canada has a higher GDP once you consider raw materials exports and financial assets.
Canada is only more powerful in terms of its role as a world citizen. But it seems odd to think about it.

India has economic, political and territorial disputes with the Communist Chinese government, so putting them tenth may be alternatively motivated.
I still can't get over Canada's ranking as a top-10 most powerful country... it just seems silly! We Canadians just don't think in those terms I guess. You bet Koreans do! (and a power-obsessed Communist Chinese gov't) |

Canada is a bit of a dark horse. I think it punches above its weight in many areas that the average punter is not aware of. Especially in the back rooms of the Anglo-mastersoftheuniverse club. |

Ahem..I suppose it is dated "2003".
Ok... August 2005 updated standings:
1)USA
2)Japan
3)Germany
4)UK
5)France
6)China
7)Italy
8)Brazil
9)Canada
10)Spain
http://www.cylist.com/List/400301090/
-not sure of what criteria were used for this list or its credibility though.
However....there are so many variables and contentions. Some say China is underestimated 20%. If you calculate it based on per capita GDP, China is outside the worlds top 100. |

I'm not privy to Roh Moo-Hyun's phone calls, but I haven't heard of any head of state wondering what Roh's take is on any particular issue. When I think of the issues of the day, like water or air pollution, nuclear proliferation, defense of human rights, cloning ^^, women's rights...somehow, SK just isn't one of the first 10 countries that pops into my mind.
I've said before (sorry Kuros, you may want to stop reading at this point because I'm going to repeat myself) that if the US wanted to solidify the alliance, all it really needs to do is to have a president say some nice and flattering things about SK and all the anti-Americanism would disappear. Quite frankly, I suspect Premier Hu has been reading my posts here on Dave's and has learned from my vast expertise in international relations. |

2. European Union, $11.65 trillion - includes economic powers such as Ireland, Germany, Britain, France.
3. China, $7,26 trillion - 1.3 billion people, with a per capita GDP 13% that of the United States.
4. Japan, $3.7 trillion - a per capita GDP 5.25 times that of China.

9. Mexico, $1.0 trillion - 106.2 million people and $9,600 per capita GDP.
10. South Korea, $925 billion - powerful for its size, its per capita GDP twice that of Mexico.
The above figures are estimates for the year 2004
G8--organization of the world's economic powerhouses
Canada
French Republic
Federal Republic of Germany
Republic of Italy
Japan
Russian Federation
United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland
United States of America
the only nation in the g8 that isn't running a national deficit is Canada.
GDP per capita (Where's China?)
http://www.worldfactsandfigures.com/gdp_country_desc.php
GNP per capita
1. United Arab Emirates $21,340
2. Qatar $21,170
3. Brunei $21,140
4. Kuwait $18,180
5. Switzerland $16,390
6. United States $14,090

8. Taiwan 8.9
9. France 9.0
10. Canada 9.1
|The most powerful nations are those that control the world's economic system, thus, the G7 (Russia is in there because of pity). Eventually Russia will be replaced with China but that's still a few years off. South Korea is no where near the top of the power list but they were probably included because they want to gear Korean economic ties and focus away from being a vessel of the United States into becoming a vessel of China..
I can't remember the g8 rankings but I think it's
1)U.S.A
2)Germany
3)Japan
4)France
5)Canada
6)UK
7)Italy
8)Russia |

When did the Chinese government turn into some top 10 list-making teenager, or John Cusack in "High Fidelity (2000)"? |

Well, to play devil's advocate...Canada is a major arms builder, despite its image. In fact, one of the biggest arms dealers in the world is Canadian. Canada has plutonium and produces parts for nuclear weapons. In fact, although the Canadian government admits that it possessed nuclear weapons in the past, its answers aren't so clear about questions concerning the present. Canada has the natural ressources and the industrial framework needed to fight an extended war. Korea doesn't. Canada is also a member of Nato. Canadian soldiers are well-trained professionals, while South Koreans soldiers are mostly conscripts (ie. cannon fodder) whose main role is to increase the size of the army in order to play a numbers game with North Korea.

People always say that Canada's military is small and does not play any role, but appearances can be deceiving. Here is a world ranking of money spent on military. True, they are not top-ten, but they aren't far off.
1
United States $ 370,700,000,000 March 2003
2
China $ 67,490,000,000 2004
3
Japan $ 45,841,000,000 2004
4
France $ 45,000,000,000 2005
5
United Kingdom $ 42,836,500,000 2003
6
Germany $ 35,063,000,000 2003
7
Italy $ 28,182,800,000 2003
8
Korea, South $ 20,000,000,000 2005
9
India $ 18,860,000,000 2005
10
Saudi Arabia $ 18,000,000,000 2002
11
Australia $ 16,650,000,000 2004
12
Turkey $ 12,155,000,000 2003
13
Brazil $ 11,000,000,000 2004
14
Spain $ 9,906,500,000 2003
15
Canada $ 9,801,700,000 2003
Also, they are a far ways off from the top ten, but a lot of notably militaristic countries are behind them. Also, they just signed a new deal in 2005 saying they were really going to up the military spending by something like 3 billion dollars. Maybe, someone can find info on that.
