I like the spirit of adventure here. Planes are so dull.
How about taking a boat to China, then train through China and Vietnam to Saigon, and then finally cross overland through Cambodia?
Another option, see if you can get on a cargo ship destined for Singapore, and then go up overland to Thailand. |

There are a number of departures from Incheon International Ferry Termional to China which could be useful, if you wanted to do the ship/train combination:
Incheon to Qingdao Ferry (2 per week)
02-3271-6753
Incheon to Tianjin Ferry (1 per week)
02-517-8671
Incheon to Dandong Ferry (1 per week)

Incheon to Dalian Ferry (2 per week)

From China, you can go overland by train to Vietnam and make your way across Cambodia to Thailand as a previous poster said. I'm actually planning a trip next month from Shanghai and Hong Kong down through Yunnan province in South Western China, then through Laos and then Thailand. There are boats you can take down the Mekong from Yunnan to Laos or Thailand. I've been getting lots of info from this forum: http://thorntree.lonelyplanet.com/ |

From Seoul to China via ferry, then through Xian for some touring and then to Laos. |

That should be possible, but it is not an inexpensive option. Cargo ships are about W100,000 per day for passengers which includes three meals.

Still, I might want to do it sometime. Perhaps a Great Lakes to Europe route. |

A couple posters here mentioned travelling overland from China to Laos and into Thailand. Has anyone done this journey?
Right now, I'm planning a trip from Incheon to Tianjin, trains all over China, down through Vietnam, across Cambodia into Thailand and finally up into Laos. But as I look more and more at train times I'm thinking I might want to cut a few hundred miles off and skip Vietnam and Cambodia..... |

I have been thinking of doing the same thing but the Chinese train system seems daunting and I have heard there is very very little English service available at train / bus stations. Do you have to book it all ahead of time with a travel agent here or online, or do you plan to just show up in China and sort it out from there? |

I have been from China to Thailand through Laos. Just a couple of comments. That last jumping off point in China, called Xishuanbanna or something, is pretty far. It was a 24 hour bus ride from Kunming, and Kunming is already way down there. My point is, you'd probably have to fly somewhere along the way just to get from Tianjin to Xishuanbanna. There was a direct bus from Xishuanbanna straight through Laos to Vientienne (on the boarder with Thai). I didn't go straight through, but I did use this bus for a segment of my journey. Don't forget once in Laos, busses break, and the schedule is often nothing more than "2 busses today", or "a bus tomorrow". But then that is the joy of Lao PDR.
The trip from Saigon up the Maekong to Cambodia and over to Thailand is nice and much easier. |
