First of all, please pardon my ignorance when it comes to technonlogy.. I don't know much about computers..but here's the deal..
I bought a few CD-Roms here to burn movies on but turns out I can't..I received a message saying the CD I insterted was either damaged (not the case as it was brand new) or that my computer did not support that brand....so I got another brand...still nothing...
laptop was bought in Canada and is quite new..so is it possible that only CD-roms bought in Canada (or the States) be compatible?...doesn't seem to make sense though as I don't think people travelling with laptops would have to stock up on CD's from wherever they bought their computers...?
any insight would be appreciated |

If you want to burn movies, you need to get DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD+RW, DVD-RW, or some combination thereof. You must also have a DVD-RW (burner) in your computer.
If you have a laptop, and it's not top-of-the-line, I kind of doubt you havea DVD burner in there. Most likely, it's a DVD/CD-RW, which means it will read DVDs, and will read and burn CDs.
If you want to burn CDs, you have to look for CD-R or CD-RW discs. -R means that once you burn onto the disc, you can't change what's on there. I think you can add to it later, but you have to specifically select an option to enable that. -RW means you can burn something, then erase it and burn something new. This is true of both CDs and DVDs.
You state you got "CD-Roms". I suspect they were probably CD-Rs. If you want to burn movies onto CD-R(W)s, you have to compress them, or split them into several files. I have no idea how to do this as I've never tried. Someone could probably offer some help in that manner.
Good look.

Sometimes XVids are no problem to put on a CD; the total movie often is two CDs. I think we need a little more info. OP, what kind of burning software are you using? Nero or Alcohol or DVD Decryptor or what? As kpr said, you won't be able to burn DVDs without a DVD burner, but you should be able to make CD videos. What media are you using and what brand is your CD/DVD drive? Have you successfully burned anything in the past with your drive? If so, what media were you using? The laptop I gave to my brother-in-law had a real sh1tty Matsu*beep*a/Panasonic burner in it...I had nothing but trouble with it. He solved the problem by getting an excellent LG DVD super-multi drive connected to a USB port(including case, it only cost him 100,000won). What I'm saying is that it might be your drive, or software, and not the media. If you're using Nero, this is what I recommend: select CD, select data disk, select files, and go. Also, burn at a slower speed to guarantee success. I've used so many different types of media available here, that would also be available in NA, such as Sony and Imation. I've had very few coasters no matter what media I used. You can also do a search for what kind of media/disks are more compatible with your drive, but when it comes to LG, there's not much that the newer burners can't handle. I recommend trying one more time with an SKC CD-RW(as long as the movie/file you want to burn is 700Mb or less. It is possible for some CDs to not work, but you shouldn't have five or six in a row not work. |

To truly solve that problem, we need more info.
The main thing is what software are you using, and what kind of format are you burning from, and to what format are you burning to. |
