Hello,
I work at a university where they use Univ. for the abbreviation for university. It is used in books published by the university, and on their team jackets, on everything here actually.
I have never seen the use of univ used like this anywhere else before. I have checked in the dictionary and it is an acceptable abbreviation for university. However the only abbreviation that I am familiar with is uni. Does anyone use the abbreviation univ? And has anyone else noticed this usage in Korea and/or other countries?
Thanks. |

In Korea, there are no rules and nothing matters. |

I'm guessing you're English. In America we tend to abbreviate University as Univ.
I just read your name. Puzzling. Maybe it's a west coast thing. But I'm definitely more used to Univ. |

Yep, I though Uni was more slang or just spoken, while Univ. was the actual abbreviation. I'm from Canadia. |

Uni is slang, Univ. would be the correct abbreviation if you had to use one or the other. |

We use "Uni" on Dave's because it saves Dave bandwidth.
We're so nice. |

I actually find "uni" rather annoying. Of course, I also find it annoying how you foreigners say "at/in university" instead of "at/in college or the university." |

In Britain, depending on which part of the country you're from, whether you go to public or private school and how old you are, once you leave high school, you go to sixth form college between 16 and 18. However, it is not uncommon for some to refer to university as 'college'. Secondary school (11-16) is often known as 'high school' and 'middle school' in parts of the UK is for children between 8 and 11.
Oh, and no native English speaker would say "at the university" any more than they would say"at the school". |

but if u say "the university" and you never mentioned the subject before it makes no sense. i can't say i went to the university to get my transcript if i never introduced the subject before (ie which uni i went to) cause u wouldnt know what im referring to. eg, "yes i went to "University of Dogfuck" to get my transcript. The university was such a bloody bureaucracy though". in that case u can say "the" the 2nd time.
i especially love "the shit" and "shit", 2 completely different meanings. it really ticked off my german friend when i said German beer was "the shit" and i loved it. they were like "German beer is shit?!!?" lol
god i really do have to stop procrastinating. |

The University of Utah is known as U of U or UU or U. |
Commonwealth Countries such as UK, Can, Aus, NZ, SA, use Uni. Americans say Univ. Same thing, political differences.
I went to a conference for a week in the summer of 97 at the University of Utah. Salt Lake City is beautiful. |
