As a soon to be tefl instructor in korea i have been doing a profuse amount of research about the dodgy operations of the emloyers. I am pissed off as the ball is predominatley in there court and the fact that there is no way for us to no whether the employer is 'legit'.
Or is there?
I no about the blacklist etc...which is awsum...but cannot nearly cover the plethora of schools in korea.
I can post my contract and have the experienced and seasoned teachers analyze it as i have seen (with great results) but the chances are that my soon to be boss will not abide to the damn thing or fire me on the 11th month?!
sorry to bitch and maon everone but i have been excited to teach and travel for years and after doing research i find that this industry is swarming with shady practices.
i guess the purpose of this venting is to ask whether there is any sure way to gain a decent job through a decent employer while in nz, where i am at the mo'. If anyone knows a good employer who may have a job for me on the 28th of feb...hook me up:-)!
hope everyone is having a great time over there though:-)! |

Sorry to say that there is no absolutes at all. You can do all the research about a hogwon, talk to former teachers etc. You are at a disadvantage if your not in korea to check things out first hand.
Thats likely your best bet, come here first you will at least have the chance to see the school, meet the director, see the apartment etc.
Another option for you may be public schools, there seems to less risk involved although there are pros and cons to teaching there also.
Good luck with your search |

And please learn the correct use of hyphens, grammar...and the difference between "their", "there" and "they're"! |

Start by applying for the most suitable jobs and search the school's on the net for possible blacklisting or bad reps. Just apply for as many as possible and be prepared for the phone calls. Get them to send you contracts and do research on what should and should not be in a contract. Once you get a decent contract worked out and you've done enough reserach (or as much as you can), you're set. Might work out. Might not.
If you want, I could help you out. I'm feeling benevolent. You can PM me, but first have some jobs offers and/or contracts for me to check out. Don't give me the name of the schools though. You wouldn't want me stealing your job (no worry there anyway). |

If you're going to nitpick, please explain you signature: "Ajuma's RULE!" Why is there an apostrophe is "ajuma's"? Is it a possessive? Are you referring to a rule which every ajuma follows, and thus is called the "ajuma's rule"? If so, what is the rule? You must wear a visor on sunny days? If you're trying to make a plural, your choice of using an apostrophe is incorrect. Just because "ajuma" is a foreign word does not mean you should buffer the plural ending with an apostrophe.
Quote: |
ENGLISH plurals of "non-words or unlikely nouns or non-canonical words"
(Charley Rowe) like <ABC's>, <P's and Q's>, <5's and 10's>, <why's and
wherefore's> often have an apostrophe. Peter T. Daniels comments on such
forms: "These are not normal according to contemporary stylebooks: the
Chicago Manual of Style (the de facto American standard) uses 60s and _l_s
(i.e., the l is italic, the s isn't). An apostrophe is inserted only in
desperate cases." |
I'm no fan of Arianna Huffington, but...
Quote: |
You see the grammatical gaffe everywhere: on billboards, in movie ads, in grocery stores, on restaurant menus -- even in the hallowed (do we still call them hallowed?) pages of the New York Times. In just the last few weeks, the "paper of record" has featured headlines that read: "New Dispute in Technology for Next Generation of DVD's," "When C.E.O.'s Are Entangled In Their Own Web of Words," and "Fast Withdrawal of G.I.'s Is Urged By Key Democrat." After seeing this last one, I couldn't help wondering: the fast withdrawal of the G.I.'s what? His division? His paycheck? His tonsils? As for that C.E.O.: Why "Are Entangled?" Why not "Is Entangled"? And if there were, in fact, more than one entangled corporate executive, why not say C.E.O.s? Why tag a gratuitous apostrophe on the execs?
And it's not just the Times. Even here on the HuffPost, Marty Kaplan, one of my favorite bloggers, recently had a post headlined "Corruption Do's & Don'ts." Ouch. |
If you're going to nitpick spelling in grammar, make sure your own house is in order first. |

You see, OP? These people aren't helping you. Just a bunch of arse lick insecure crap. Don't listen to that. Sometimes it's funny to make fun of someone's grammar in certain situations, but... I know you can spell. Big Farking Deal.
Anyway, I offered to help you. I know how it can be. You could post your contracts on this site, but it's easier to talk one-on-one with someone. I'm sincerely offering my help and you can PM me. |

What happened to the position I hooked you up with last week? Did you get in touch with the school I put you on to? To be honest, as far as kind directors and good working conditions go you will be hard pushed to find any better.
Anyway good luck and let me know what happens. |

Why would any of us "hook you up" when we know nothing about you beyond one poorly worded post here??
Best of luck with your job hunt. |

Why wouldn't anyone hook him up? Does it really matter how his grammer is? Not really! As long as he can speak English, show up for class on time and dance like a white monkey in the classroom, without going insane for a year, he'll be fine
Welcome to the ROK! Feel free to PM me for contract trashing
Geez.....bashing a newb because his grammer isn't perfect that time of the month Ajuma? |
