The key is in the second group: it alternates between two and three people. Part of the explanation is the first group. Only two bodies slide over from the fourth (re-edited back to the correct statement!) group, but the first guy in the first group is drawn in such a way that it looks like only the very top of his head is sliced off when the picture slides, but in the other version when the halves are switched he's a little taller. (His head is not replaced, meaning no portion from another body is needed.)
Basically, the second group alternates between two and three people.
