I just got back from the doctor, and he wants me to consider having my tonsils removed. I've had recurrent infections for the last two months and the antibiotics never remove the infection completely.
It's weird because in Canada my tonsils were never once a problem. Five months in Korea and multiple anitbioic prescriptions later, and they are currently swollen to 5x+ their normal size.
Am I just not adjusting well tonsil-wise to the new bacteria on this side of the world? Has anyone else had a similar problem?

I've had tonsilitis 3 times in the last 20 years and each time it's been 'well, if it happens again we'll remove them.' But 5&1/2 of those 20 years were in Korea and my tonsils never gave me a problem there.

I have a friend who came over and visited last year. He was actually doing a one month internship (whatever you want to call it) at SNU Hospital. He is a med student in Canada, and he got tonsilitis while he was here. I asked him if he had to get them removed and he said they stopped removing them about 5-10 years ago because it IS NOT necessary. So, if your doctor here is saying to get them removed, change doctors.

I know a guy who had his tonsils removed here, last fall. Apparently it hurts like a son of a beach when you get it done as an adult (maybe kids heal faster or something?) and his doc was stingy with the pain meds.

I got really really sick with tonsilitis several times a year when I was a kid (so bad that my throat would bleed)..... and then it seemed to go away during my teen years. Once I hit 20 the tonsilitis came back and Ive been getting it a few times a year.

Wish I had mine removed years and years ago.

Ive had tonsilitis here in Korea but the doctor never told me I should have them removed.

Had a lot of tonsilitis in early adulthood/teenagehood. Never had them removed. I think thats becoming less common a remedy.

Yeah, that's what I thought, so I'm wondering if I should be listening to this doctor. They do keep getting infected, but it is my first winter in the country - dry air, new bacteria, etc. Should I just rely on antibiotics? I'm otherwise in perfect health, so an operation seems a bit extreme.
