Something hit me like a truck about midnight last night, and it's been so bad today that I'm all but incapacitated... waterfall runny nose, sneezing, and coughing. Some tree or flower must have released pollen or something. I'm new to this area I'm living in, but it's a problem all over town, mostly.

Any hints as to medicine? I just bought some Korean over-the-counter medicine from the pharmacy. It's called Allertec. Not sure it'll work.

I'm currently hiding at home and running 3 air cleaners, which helps a lot, as long as I don't walk around... outside, I'm dead.

Cetirizine is what they're giving OTC these days. That's Zyrtec.

I am also a chronic allergy sufferer, but I have managed to get them under control.

Cetrizine works well to prevent or lessen allergy attacks, but is not potent to stop an attack.

The best over-the-counter remedy for this is pseudoephedrine. There is a drug called Green Nose that packs a ton of this stuff into each pill. Be careful though, pseudoephedrine is dangerous to use as a long term solution.

To control symptoms, you might want to try a nasal corticosteroid prescribed from your local doctor. There is one called Nasonex that works very well for me.

Good Luck!

I feeeeel you.. my claritin isn't helping too much but thank goodness it's raining here in this part of Korea!! The water is now yellow with pollen >_>

I know it's not really meant for this.... but advil will help the sinus pain/heavy head so it won't feel as bad if you can't find anything better. You're still going to be blowing your nose and coughing though~ Mad I eat Ricola constantly to control the coughs.

Hi,

One tip I have heard, be sure to rinse out your nose, eyes and mouth often with warm water.

Apparently, if what was said above is true.

It's only about $3 a box.

I've been prescribed chloripheniramin by my doctor. It's a first generation anti-histamine that is pescription only and has a mild sedative effect (not enough to really compromise your ability to function during the day though). This seems to do the trick on those days when Clarityn fails to take the edge off of things.

Cold and flu medicines that have pseudoephedrine in are also pretty effective I find (particularly syrups and soluble drink solutions - for these you'll most likely need to go to western food stores like the ones in Itaewon). The main drawback is that pseudoephedrine can stop you from sleeping, which is why it is better to buy the cold medicines that have other things in them as well, to counteract this side effect.

I'm curious, does anybody know what specifically is triggering our allergies? Since Tuesday my allergies have been going crazy and now, with the rain, there's all this yellow stuff in the puddles. It's not the infamous yellow dust because the yellow dust levels haven't been that high in a while. What is this devilish weed that is blooming right now?

I've heard that it's pine pollen....although most people aren't allergic to it; it just happens to me more visible than other pollen and pine trees pollinate at the same time as many other trees like alder, birch, cedar which are major allergy triggers.

The best for severe allergic attacks will always be Benadryl aka diphenhydramine.
