G'day!
Just was wondering. I have taught for 3yrs in SK. I can't say I was the biggest fan of the country...but hey..money talks. And I actually really enjoyed teaching the kids. (a passion of mine). I guess it helps that I taught at the same place for 3years, and the kids..atleast some of them became surrogate children to me...lol Anyways..it wasn't great to say goodbye.
Anyways..to make a long story short. From what I've heard through the grapevine...and trying to find here...is that CANADIANS ONLY, have to get their degrees "certified" at the Canadian Embassy...which in turn sends a 4 digit code over to Immigration when the "coast is clear" aka...squeeky clean. Now...can someone confirm this? Is it only CANADIANS that have to do this? Is this procedure in fact "true" .
I just want the low down on what is going on in Korea. Hopefully I"m completely wrong...Thanks!
Ps. When you respond...just what is the full procedure to get your visa in Korea now? |

I cannot confirm the procedure that you indicate in your post. I can let you know that recently immigration clerks told me that Korean immigration is being very careful to thoroughly examine Canadian degrees and credentials. They also said they were being careful with Chinese. They seemed less concerned about Americans and other nationalities. |

OH MY GOD!!!!!!!
QUICK EVERYONE, QUAKE WITH FEAR!!!!
I don't see it happening. Why would the embassy take on something like that? It's not their job description, it's in immigration's job description.
I smell a troll. |

I might turn this thread into a controversy by saying this:
I highly doubt Canadians can get screwed around with in this country. To me, they seem to have more of a free ride than any other nationality, with them being able to get a 6-month tourist visa while Americans and such can only get up to 90 days stay.
As has been said before; What can be seen in Korea that can take 6 months?
I have traveled around Korea and it only took me about a total of 2 months to see everything.
But will (or the question should be re-phrased to "can") Korea change the Canadian entry policy to be inline with the US or the rest?
Most Canadians and Koreans will say no.
Why?
Because by changing the policy to less than 6 months will bring a recipricol policy by Canada (who has the same 6 month entry policy for Koreans seeking to study in Canada)
So, I would say that by targeting Canadians in the recent crackdown, it only makes them say "screw getting a teaching visa [it brings more trouble and hassles], I'm staying on my tourist visa."
To me, if I were Canadian, it sounds more logical to stay here only on a tourist visa.
1. More money
2. More freedom
3. Work less
Gee, sometimes I wish my grandmother stayed in Canada instead of going south to the US.... |

It wouldn't have mattered assuming you have a real degree
or have no problem disobeying the laws of a foreign country |

Lastat...you are aware that the lenght of the tourist visa in Korea is determined by the lenght of the tourist visa Koreans get in your home country right?
These are usually reciprocal arrangements.
For example: Koreans cannot even enter the US without a visa arranged before coming over. I experienced this with my wife the first time we traveled to Canada going through the US.
We also visited friends in Seatle a couple of years back and my wife needed a visa.
Koreans going to Canada as tourists need no visa and can stay for 6 months..much like Canadians going to Korea.... |

I'm Canadian and I haven't heard anything about this. My school is a public school and they are really good about stuff like this. Plus I went to immi and nothing said whatsoever about this. My co-teacher went with me too. |

That's nothing. Just wait until they start allowing us the 6th month visa, but with a required check at 2 and 4 months as to our location and questions as to our current actions/plans in Korea. Please report to our friendly immigration staff, and we will gladly allow you your 6 months for free, after a little chat, of course.
They don't have to remove the 6 month tourist visa for Canadians, but they can be very creative with what happens in between. |

It wasn't Canada that allowed the Japanese to take over Korea in exchange for the Phillippines (like a sports trade) or Canada that turned it's back as the nation was sliced in half. We are allies.... |

Relax..many American fakes were found also. They checked everyone they could, but they singled the Canadians because there area lot of Canadians here. Really, every English speaking country has a number of losers who can't get a degree and so they buy one. |

You can barely write English. Please, don't come back and attempt to teach English. Canadians and everyone else are paying for the actions of bad, dishonest, and utterly incompetent teachers. It behooves us to police our own and call a spade a spade. If you can't demonstrate an ability to create a readable post, you're probably not equipped to explain simple English concepts. |
