Today, one of my grade 1's came up to me and said "Saranghe" and then said "I love you." That was strange (coming from a boy, I am a guy) but not anything I'm not used to from Asia. He then said "I want romance." First, I'd like to know where he learned that Smile He then kissed me on the cheek before I realized what he was doing. I quickly made sure that won't happen again though (I hope atleast).
Just another day at my elementary school...

My (male) friend's (male) high school student gave him an 'I love you' card and on it drew a picture of an erect *beep* ejaculating.

There is much in this culture that we will never know about...nor that I care to.

yeah yeah, there's sexually confused gays in the west too...but when students have the comfort to send their teacher an erupting wang card there is a degree of acceptability and comfort with doing it that is just unheard of in the west...

the more i know about this culture the more it makes my head spin. conservative my ass.

I get more than a few "I love you's" from students at my technical high school (where males outnumber females by at least 3 to 1..)

My first instinctive response after hearing it from a boy was to threaten to "choke slam" him out my fifth-floor classroom window. When I hear it from girls, I usually just remind them that I'm like a halaboji (I think it's often a case of confused English usage and limited vocabulary...)

I've since gotten more creative: "You love me? Please give me some money, then - Mon won, OK?" ... "You love me? - I love me, too - Everybody loves me!" ... "I love you, teacher" "Really? I love to punch you, student (and I throw a sharp straight right that loudly smacks the palm of my left hand at the last instant - instead of his face... Razz )

Please tell me that first instinctive response and the throwing of a punch is sarcasm or a joke I didn't get. (or that smiley face is to show it is all a joke and not that you pulling away at the last minute is funny)

I usually maintain a gruff comic persona with my high school students, and, in the lower level classes especially, there's a lot of interest in WWE wrestling, and they understand all the wrestling terms: "chair shot", "clothesline", "choke-slam" and practice them on each other. One clownish student in particular has a habit of repeatedly blurting "I love you" during class, and he's the one I "threatened to "choke-slam" if he annoyingly said it one more time...

(If one of my Korean co-teachers is in the classroom I don't concern myself with discipline issues at all because they tend to beat the crap out of them with various implements for reasons largely unfathomable to me...)
