So, I'm toying with the idea of buying some large items in Seoul and then renting a bongo truck (or something similar) to drive them down to Gwangju.

Anyone know:

1) ...how much it costs to rent one (just the truck. I don't want to use a mover because I know how much that costs and I can drive the danged thing myself)?

2) ...if it's possible to rent a truck in Seoul and return it in Gwangju so I don't have to drive it round-trip?

Yeah, taek-bae is the way to move large objects around the country. If you're buying furniture or appliances, the merchants will usually arrange transportation for you. Even it it's all the way to Gwangju, it has to be cheaper than renting a truck. I've rented trucks before plenty of times (though not for cross-country travel) and they always, always, always come with the driver attached. The DIY approach... wrong country, seems to me. But I could be wrong. Doubt it, though.

OK, so taek-bae... if I'm buying from a private individual, not a retail seller, can you get one of the taek bae companies to pick-up, package and ship the item? Or do you have to package it yourself?

Again, no experience transporting large items around the country, so I'm just speculating. Can you or the private individual wrap them yourselves? You'd have to do that even if renting a truck and driving it yourself were an option. I use old blankets and rubber cord & tape to keep furniture from getting scratched. The taek-bae truck may have these or other materials, but you can ask them when you call to enquire about fees. (This being Korea, you should have a contingency plan in case the driver forgets or isn't told that the items need packaging.)

A friend of mine rented a bongo to move his stuff from one end of the country to another. It cost him 80,000 for 2days/1 night I believe. He drove it. Dunno how you track down the bongo-hire places though. The big car rental companies like Hertz seem really expensive in comparison, and they are for cars not vans.

Interesting! And inexpensive. But did he have to drive it back? That would negate the savings advantage for a lot of people. Four trips across the Republic instead of just two? Whose time is that cheap?

Any chance you could talk to your friend and track down some specifics for me? I'd be very very interested.
