Just 5 minutes ago, one of the guy's from the international marketing department called me up to ask me about an article he had seen at nNaver.com. He found that Krispy Kreme seems to be using a very unusual marketing slogan, and he wanted to know if that kind of thing was really acceptable in American culture.

Check out the link. This is a real news article. The content of the article is just some boring crap about the franchise. But it looks like somebody at naver didn't check the image very carefully.

Oh, man, the hilarity continues. So before I started this thread, I had received the following email:

Quote:
Happy New Year

I am XXX lee, International Sales and Marketing Division Leader.

I have a question.

I read a News article today about Krispy Kreme. The article has the following advertising image.

I was startle to read the ad phrase, So good, youll suck dick.

I thought the phrase has too dirty meaning to be used as advertising phrase.

What do you think about this ad image? [refer to OP to see original image]

So I talked on the phone with that guy and was pretty confused by the situation too. He said that maybe the author of the article had pulled the image from a stock image directory and that it was a joke image. I thought that was a good bet. So I searched around the internet a little to see that the deal was. And I wrote back with this email, feeling more than a little absurd the whole time I was writing it

Quote:
Like I said, that image must be a joke image. I think I've found the source of the joke. In America, there's a comedian named Chris Rock who is very famous. He did a comedy routine where he said that Krispy Kreme donuts are so good, it's like they have drugs in them (specifically 'crack'). And you know, some people prostitute themselves to buy drugs, so he said "Krispy Kreme: so good, you'll suck a dick." I guess somebody heard that routine and made a funny image from it.

Here is the original comedy routine:

"If drugs were legalized, there would be a drug spot in every corner. It wouldn't be a Starbucks. It'd be Weedbucks. McDonald's? McCokeald's. Krispy Kreme? Kracky Kreme. Krispy Kreme Donuts are so good, if I told you it had crack in it, you would be like, "I knew it was something in there. These donuts are too good. Got me going there at 4 o'clock in the morning going, "Come on, man, open up. Let me have at least one donut. I'll do anything. I'll suck your dick!" That should be the new slogan. Krispy Kreme: So good, you'll suck a dick."

And so I get this reply:

Quote:
Dear XXXX,

Thank you very much for you kind explanation and consideration.

I add 4 colleagues as message recipients as I asked them of the meaning of the phrase.

BRGDS

XXXX Lee

hehehe. Well, I guess we've all learned something valuable. I wonder when Naver will pull that picture.

if you go to google and type in krispy kreme, then hit image, that is the very first picture you get.

May be the author of that article just went to google and searched for a picture and was too lazy to go through more than the very first picture.?

No Corean I know would ever do such a thing. Surely, this is a conspiracy against Naver and the Corean people. The foreigner at the company behind the original Krispy Kreme photo must have become angry and changed the photo behind the image link to get even with my blessed Corea.
