What's the bottom line? Regardless of what the trainers say what's the average amount of time one will spend on homework nightly? What's the most? Could someone taking the CELTA handle a 9-6 weekend job? thnx!

When I took the CELTA course in Prague, I'd already been teaching for 2+ years, and I don't think I could have handled all that was required PLUS a 9-6 weekend job. That said, if the job is mindless and you can find some time at work to work on your homework, it MAY be doable.

I don't see what the big deal would be to have a weekend job. I mean, it's only on the weekend, right? You would be very busy. It would basically be like working for a whole month without a single day off. But if you're willing to do that, I don't see why you would be unable to do it. It's definitely doable if you don't need a day off. You have to do 3 projects. The three weekends is the best time to do them, and if you're willing to spend all your free time on the weekends, you can definitely do it. It would be a bit exhausting, though.

I got a good eight hours sleep a night and took one day off every weekend...

so i'd say it's possible to work a weekend job too (though it's NOT allowed according to celta standards)

but then the big homework assignments (in addition to lesson planning homework!) would cut into one's sleep time.

and the month is grueling enough without the extra load...

i highly recommend one wait a few months more and save up enough money to not have to work on weekends

I spent an hour or two per night on homework, most nights.

I took off Saturdays and worked, with other students in my class, on most Sundays.

I'd recommend against doing a weekend job because I think it's important to relax a bit and the CELTA should keep you busy, even if you're an experienced teacher.

-Thanks to everyone for replying. The irony is that I asked three friends with CELTAs and they all said a weekend job would be manageable. I guess better safe than sorry.
What about homework? Experienced teachers say the CELTAs blown out of proportion and not as difficult as trainers would have you believe. What's the average amount of time spent on homework nightly?

I am about to start CELTA in bangkok in two days - I don't have a laptop though - can i still get all the work done and get a good grade???

I took the CELTA in Bulgaria last summer and got a good mark. My impression was that the less experience you have, the easier the course. (I had no experience going in.) That's because you don't have any habits and it is easy for you to just do what the trainers tell you. Honestly, the homework should be no big deal for anyone with an undergraduate degree that involved some essays. So yes, you could probably manage to work a weekend job at the same time, but I wouldn't advise it. For me, the weekends were a great time to socialize with the other trainees and explore the city. In any case, good luck with the course! Yes, they teach you their particular system, but it gives you some good habits and many new ideas to work with.
