I was shocked to hear that the wonderful Schonell Theatre is in danger of closing down. Sad Sad Sad

The introduction of the VSU (Voluntary Student Unionism) has affected many things, including the subsidy from the Student Union that the theatre relied upon.

This next month will be a make or break period for the Schonell. It will be a fight for its life. In order to get bums on seats they are currently doing a promotion, where you can see films for half price (only $6) for the whole of January. (Ask about this when you buy your ticket, or they will automatically bill you for the normal ticket price - like they did my friend yesterday. You need to fill in a temporary membership form).

If you want to keep the Schonell open please do the following:

Go to see a film there at least once this month

and/or

urge everyone you know to see a film there this month.

It really would be a terrible shame to see it close. I went to see a film (Paradise Now) there yesterday, and I asked the salesperson how their 'make or break' season was going - and she said they were doing a lot worse than they'd hoped. I felt quite dismayed to hear it.

It is the only cinema of its kind left in Brisbane and they show movies that don't usually make it into mainstream cinemas despite international acclaim/awards. It's also the only place you're likely to see a foreign language film. The films are generally of a much higher quality than your average Hollywood blockbuster, making the Schonell a great community asset.

Check it out: http://www.schonell.com

Please please do your bit to help it survive!!

I went there yesterday to see "Words of My Perfect Teacher" and I noticed they are doing a special deal:

For a total of $30 ($15 each) 2 people can see a movie AND have a pizza between them and a coffee each. For $35 you can replace the coffee with wine.

The pizza's are considered by many to be the best pizza in Brisbane.

That's a pretty good deal.

Come on guys, you've only 2 weeks left to show your support for this wonderful little theatre.
