Does anyone have any experience getting tested for STD's in Korea?

I remember reading something that says that if you show up positive for HIV or AIDS, they will automatically deport you. I'm not so concerned about that, but I'm wondering about the process and response if I were to go into a place like the Samsung International clinic and ask for some tests. Also, prices?

Thanks.

I guess that if you don't have any specific experience or knowledge of this, knowledge or information about the international clinics, like Samsung, would be helpful too.

Thanks.

My former roomate had a case of the clap...he just went to a regular Korean hospital.

I don't know about AIDS/HIV. He had the burning thing going on and so he knew he had to hit the hospital.

The International Clinic in Itaewon does a lot of testing for stuff, but they charge through the nose (or through something else, in this case) whether you have Korean health insurance or not. I no longer go there.

Just so you know, I had a pee/blood test from a regular Korean doctor, which he said checked for AIDS and symptoms of the basic STDs, and it cost me about 10,000 won (I have health insurance).

Unless things have changed, the International clinic charges these rates, which are in my opinion, absolute highway robbery:

been_here_years told me a story of a guy who found out he had AIDS while in Korea. This was several years ago. First of all they didn't tell him the diagnosis, they told his boss, and the boss had to break it to him. They also gave him 24 hours to pack up all his things and leave the country. If it took him more than 24 hours (and he was very ill) they would handcuff him to a hospital bed and deport him with none of his things. I hope I've remembered the story correctly. I believe it.

You can go to the local GU Gov't Hospitals and have it done...and you can give a fake name...it's pretty cheap from what I remember...my girlfriend (now wife) insisted....but that's a whole other ball of....blah blah.

....took 2 weeks for the results....

...my name was MONICA...my old hogwon director's name...they give you a slip of paper with a number and the alias you use for pick up time.

All of the sudden everybody's "friends" seem to have all the experience eh? what, no first hand accounts? Well, I'll tell you that a friend of a friend of a guy I know told me that there's a foreigner clinic at the Yonsei Severence Hospital in Shinchon (just walk to the end of the main drag from the subway station towards the university and look right. huge hospital) where you can go for stuff like that. I dunno specifically about AIDS tests though. good on you (or your friend) for getting one though, dude.

that is interesting.. would she have insisted you take the test if you were korean? Did you insist she take a test herself?

I'd be more worried about catching an STD from a korean than a foreigner in korea. Koreans on the whole seem pretty clueless about sexual health.

This should be turned into a sticky. Always useful to know where to go in such a situation.

Stick sticky....(quite an appropriate name for this for this thread I think ;o)

Can we also get a list of places where you can get tested in one post ranther than new readers having to trawl the entire thread?

Thanks.

I've researched this, for friends (no, really!) and there is a sticky for it. It's in the FAQs under Health. There.

I am sure she would have insisted if I were from blahblahnegorie Gu, Mars, or wherever - she is very stubborn and isn't deterred easily no matter what it is about....and yes we went and were both tested.

..as you stated she was very naive about sexual health...and assumed stereotypically that I was a superduper humpin machine like we all were/are... Wink ....

...anyway..the test was for HIV as well as your standard STDs....and again the cost was minimal, it was private, and worth the peace of mind I think most people, who may have been BUSY but not as careful, might want to find.

I got all my fluids checked at Seoul National University Hospital outside of HyeHwa station... it was part of a full physical I got over the summer.. cost something like 80,000 for full she-bang... no complaints.
