Hey folks,

Does anyone know how one would go about getting an international driver's license in Korea, or if it's even possible? I don't mean a Korean license either, I mean international. I'll be joining my brother in Japan for a road trip, and I'd like to be able to pitch in on the driving duties. Anyone got any info?

You have to get it back in your home country. You cannot apply for one overseas, but if you have a valid one overseas, I think you can renew it. The thing has to be renewed every year, before the expiry date. If it has expired, and you are overseas, you are SOL. I have no links for you, but that was the story told to me when I got mine before coming over. I have since let it expire and have gotten a Korean license. And you still get to keep the license from your home country.

It depends on what licence you are using for your basis for an international.

If you have had your KOREAN drivers licence for more than 3 years you can get an international one from here based on that.

If you are from Canada you can submit your documents to the CAA (BCAA, AMA, etc) (get the forms from their website) and they will send it to you.

Not sure about the process if you are from the states or down under, sorry.

A friend of mine (American) got an international license in Korea with his Korean license. His American license had expired, so he was driving in the States with an international license from Korea! Have a Korean friend call your local DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles) and find out what you need to get one.
