Got an offer for 1.8 million won per month teaching at an institution :
"Although our English educators are well qualified to teach, many have not had a lot of experience in teaching a foreign language in a private institution environment. Teacher training at SLP, helps new teachers learn from experienced master teachers, and help them adapt to the SLP environment. "
Is this the acceptable figure for an experienced teacher of 4 years?
Hmmm.... |

No, 1.8 is ridiculous for someone with 4 years experience. |

Well, I had no experience and started off with 2 million. I think that's standard. You can do better. |

Well, I've just got off the phone to a recruitment agency after submitting my details through their site and I've no experience and no TESL qualification...
They told me that I'd be starting on 1.9 - 2.0 a month, so I'd expect 4 years experience to get you a lot more, unless this is only a part time position... |

That's low, but SLP is pretty much always like that. If it's the SLP in Pyeongchon or especially Sanbon it might be worth it, but it depends on your teaching style. The curriculum is all set up beforehand and all you have to do is follow along - classes are 80 minutes long but I've seen a lot of teachers just do 40 minutes, give the kids worksheets to do and then spend the other 40 not talking and just working on some paperwork for the rest. I've never been a teacher in Korea so I can't say but I've worked in an SLP before and it's one of those jobs where you just follow along and before you know it a year is up. The biggest issues when I worked there were accomodation because they were in the middle of moving teachers from shared apartments into their own smaller officetels because there would always be complaints when people didn't get along. I was lucky and met one of my best friends (a guy from Ireland) there who was assigned as my roommate. |

Thanks people.
I think the pay is low, but it should be negotiable. I did a search and someone else mentioned the same thing last year!
I was going to go for the TESOL course, but I think you would only get an extra 100,000-200,000 won for that, not a lot for what you paid for TESOL. |

1.8 is low unless the hours are also shorter than your regular 2.0/120 teaching periods per month contract. |

Which SLP is it with? I would be very careful and research thoroughly before signing on with an SLP, having managed to barely complete a year with them. That was with on of the non-corporately owned franchises that might be what gives SLP a bad name. Unless there have been significant changes (like the owners have sold it to someone with a soul), I would recommend staying away from the SLPs in Godeok, Gangdong and Gwangjin-gu, which might also be spelled Kodeok, Kangdong and Kwangjin-gu, though there are, of course, hundreds of others which might be perfectly fine. |

If it is the SLP in East Seoul - Purple line (Godeok station next to e-mart) then run, don't walk to the next offer. No teacher training, crappy conditions and limited supplies. After 3 years in Korea, I lasted 4 days at that place and then told them to push off. |
