i just received this email, no doubt many others here did too, from something called 'foreign teachers' union'. the idea is interesting (although i'm not a teacher now) but there seems to be a very racist undertone to their message. read for yourself:

Dear Teacher,
My name is David Nunan. If you are a new ESL teacher, you probably dont know me. However, if you have been teaching for a few years, you probably heard of me or perhaps used one of my seven ESL books. I am trying to contact as many teachers as I can for the launch of my new Homepage www.foreignteachersunion.com . We hope to have as many as 10,000 teachers join together to make teaching easy and your stay in a foreign country pleasant. Please feel free to report any mistreatment by your employer. We have many ways to help you get back what you deserve. This is not 1997 anymore, when many foreign teachers including myself were mentally abused by the Koreans. Now, in 2006 I hope that all foreign teachers stand together, and help each other. Many software companies from America and Singapore are supporting this page.
The Purpose of this homepage is not to recruit or exploit teachers like other ESL Homepages, managed by Asians, but to actually help experienced and non-experienced ESL Teachers. Dont let the Asians take your confidence and pride away. Do what you have to do and then get the hell out of there. However, get some training from our company while you are living in Asia, because the software for he learner programs will be cheaper for you to buy.

hmm... 'mentally abused by the koreans', 'don't let the asians take your confidence and pride' and 'do what you have to do and then get the hell out'.. who the hell are these clowns?
i can imagine what 'apologists' would think about this, but i would also hope the 'korea-bashers' among you might disapprove. i really hope this union thing doesn't get off the ground.
(edit: the web link doesn't work anyway. maybe this means it's a hoax?) |

Literally, the bottom line is - they're selling software. Anyone who gets 'suckered' is an idiot. |

I dont understand WHY ANYONE would let themselves be abused..
in 97 in 87 in 2007!!! WHY tolerate it?
if any korean! American! Italian, chinese. canadian! or anyone tried to mentaly abuse me! or belittle me! I would walk right up to him and TELL HIM TO *beep* OFF!!! right in his face!!! and I have done this a couple times in korea!! I would, will NEVER stand for it!!
so that guy is an idiot for putting up with that abuse in the first place!
and ESL teachers who cry about being abused by their wonjungnim in bar over a beer! or on this board cry about how their wonjungnim treats them! BOO FUCKING HOO!!!
WHY PUT UP WITH IT?????
if you stand their in front of the fire you deserve to be burnt!
so dont cry about it!!
VICTIMS of Abuse are weak people! stand up for yourself!
look that WANKER right in the face and SAY! *beep* OFF!!!
and walk!!! |

If you'd have had to take it up the arse from a Korean boss 3 different times in one year, you'd wax racist to get your point across too.
The cowboys ride the ponies, coz the ponies don't know.
Like others on this thread have attempted to state, why would you let anyone do you over so easily when just a little research and forethought would ease you toward a perfectly satisfactory employment experience in any country where you care to spend a significant amount of time.
It's like some wisewordy barstud put it: "Those who are unable to learn from their mistakes are destined to repeat them" |
