I thought I'd say "thanks" to someone who contributed to my "Romantic Restaurants?" thread.

Ok, what I really wanna know is what that friend's spouse think of the jazz in the different places that the friend posted on based on information that the spouse gave to the friend in the first place, ya foller? What does THAT man think is the "best in town." Sometimes the best is often a dive, not the place for yuppies. I mean Blue Moon was good, but some pimply kiddy girl was playing the piano grooves like a technical understudy to Liberace. This old Korean, middle-aged, zoot-suit-wearing dude played killer sax there, however, but I wanna know where he goes when he's not playing to pay the bills. (I shudda stalked him, I knew it.)

I went to the Once in a Blue Moon in Apgujung near the Galleria dept. store and it was pretty nice. The jazz band that played was pretty decent and the female vocalist there was really good. The club reminded me of some jazz bands that I used to frequent in New Orleans. The food and drinks were a bit pricey but it's a great place for a quiet evening listening to good jazz.

Pure jazz is cool, it's the roots of the music I love. But I wanna know where is all the acid jazz, trip hop, reggae, soul, funk, fusion type bands. You know, mixing live horns, guitars, keys, with synthesisers and drums machines, total mind trip music.

Blue Moon was pretty cool. Loud as fook. Take some ear plugs and don't take a date because you will not be able to verbally communicate over the screeching saxophone. Expensive gin and tonics. C'est la vie ....

I like a little place called "Blue Moon" or "Under the Blue Moon" or something to do with moons. It's near Hapjeong station, on the main road leading to Hong-Ik Uni station, behind a wedding hall called "Marry Queen" that's shaped like a boat.

I went in there on a Sunday night and there was still a great atmosphere- lots of middle aged koreans up for a good night. Fairly expensive drinks, but way cheaper than Once In A Blue Moon (which is good too).

Just try telling the folks back home about something like this.

("... something about moons ... behind a wedding hall called 'Marry Queen' that's shaped like a boat ...")

That's what makes this place so fun and interesting.

Live Jazz, near Ewha womens' univeristy is very good. On Sunday evenings they have a big band - 16 players - and it is top notch. Drinks not overly expensive and good enough food at sensible prices. There may be a cover charge when the big band is on, I can't remember.

I guess the night I went to Blue Moon was an exception since it wasn't all that loud. But drinks are expensive no doubt. Since I was there on a Sat. night, I thought maybe a weeknight might be a better time to go.

CHEONYEONDONGANDO (+82-2-743-5555): This quite upscale and large restaurant is better known among English speakers as "Live Jazz Club" because of its very large neon sign that proclaims said title. It plays host to the top jazz artists of the country plus the highly recognized newer acts seven nights a week with many of those nights including several jazz acts.

It has in recent years expanded its professional range of jazz presentations to cover everything from fusion jazz to the more traditional sounding stuff including that from the "big band" era. Many of the jazz professionals from All That Jazz tend to play this club as well as music here runs into around 2am which allows some bands to travel over and play both clubs the same night.

It is a bit pricey to go here for just the music, but for a lovely night out,
this is the place. It also opens its doors during the afternoon/early evening, but sans musicians. It is one of the best places in Seoul to buy jazz CDs.

Edit: there is a map on the link above. I didn't realise it had a name other than Lize Jazz!

The area around Hongik University has quite a few jazz clubs. I went to one (can't remember the name) but if you just show up, there is always live jazz at the clubs there as far as I know. Give it a look. I had fun there, even though I missed most of the set..
