Wow, what an interesting program.
You can download it and run it off of CD. It installs easily if you choose to use it.
Heck, I might have to go out and buy a cheap computer just to run this on. |

... I can see that you're easily impressed BBE. You'd never believe what I have in my apartment ... it's a TOASTER. You can pop in bread and it'll come out all hot and toasted.
... seriously though, live cd's are nothing new. Buying the second computer sounds like an excellent idea. Or you could download and install VMWare if you wanted. Linux tends to be somewhere between OS and never ending OS tutorial at times. But that's what makes it such fun IMO.
If you are going for a Debian Linux OS though, then I'd recommend that you go with Ubuntu. It's excellent for a beginner and they have lots of community support at www.ubuntuforums.org You'll find it on google.
Good Luck ! |

Being a newbie to Linux I decided to go with Xandros. It's very user friendly, and with Cross-Over you can install, and run a lot of Window$ programs.
You can get all these for free via P2P, or bit torrent.
I know that Linux is free, but it in my research I found that if you want to migrate to Linux from Windows, companies like Xandros and Lindows will charge you to make the move easy.
As for apps, which is better, Open Office or Star Office? |

Hmmm.... you assume I am "easily impressed" because someone can download and install something from a CD?
I am impressed with MEPIS over many of the other linux versions out there because it is much more user-friendly. The "work easily out of the box" Linux distributions that are have often required you to "pay" for functionality to do certain things, are often slower than windows (Lindows) and give the general surfer little reason to bother with leaving a Windows environment.
Some distributions are approaching an easier level, and MEPIS is doing a nice job.
Why some Linux people think that the general Windows public is willing to pay nearly the same amount of money as Windows to make their product function easily is beyond me. Many of these people just don't get it. People want a reason other than, "It's not Windows" to switch to something else.
The average mom/dad/general user out there has no interest in worrying about learning a whole new OS, let alone typing in line after line of geek-code to install additional programs (free or not), or get their messaging program to work. The distros that can package Linux in a non-bloated way that actually WORK EASILY without charging you $$ to do it -- now that impresses me.
Linux is getting better, and becoming more user-friendly, while still maintaining an edge over Windows. It is approaching a level at which the average user can download it for free and make use of it.
Yes, that impresses me.
Damn Small Linux and Puppy Linux are also very interesting when loaded on old, slow computers. They literally resurrect ancient machines and turn them into equipment you can use. |
