hi everybody,

when i leave this country (SOON!!!!) i plan on getting a small dog. i know nothing about them though, so i was wondering if you guys could lead me in the right direction.

it needs to be:

1) cute
2) really small
3) not expensive
4) mutt is ok
5) calm

what breeds should I go for? I want the type of dog i can dress in sweaters and take with me on a bicycle basket.

This looks like a useful book on small dog breeds: http://www.amazon.com/gp/reader/0764120956/ref=sib_dp_pt/104-6605994-1268767#reader-page

I'd check out newspapers for ads posted by people who need to have their dogs adopted - also pet rescue agencies that need to get people to adopt dogs that otherwise will be "put to sleep" for financial reasons...

Ever see Lilo and Stich? Now, that was a good dog...

You need to research several different types of dogs before you buy one. Yahoo.com used to have a gread questionair but I don't know if it is still there.
My advice is to look at your lifestyle and the type of place you'll be living. Some dogs are super energentic Jack Russel Terriers and other terriers, while others are a little lazier such as basset hounds. How big will your yard be? Do you want a jogging parnter? Or a companion? How much hair do you want to put up with? short hair dogs tend to shed but then long hair dogs, like poodles, need regular trips to the hairdressers. There's plus and minuses to every pet. And remember toilet training a dog can be as frustrating as training a baby. In my case it took just as long Shocked

I'm also thinking you'll have to compromise on the 'calm' factor. Medication, perhaps?
I grew up with a poodle (miniature.) She was awesome. Maybe toy poodles are cool, too.
I never met a Yorkie I didn't like.

Consider a ferret. Initial outlay may be more, but over time, maintenance and food
are cheaper. They'll use a litter box, don't mind being dressed up, and score high on the
'attention-grabber' scale. They're just plain fun.

me too! i got a poodle in korea, too!
great dogs. not yappy if they're trained right (contrary to popular belief), smart, cute (you don't have to give them those freaky haircuts!) and they don't shed...the best part.

but i agree with a previous poster. if you're not picky, there are places to adopt dogs. sorry, i don't have the links handy here at work.

Yorkshire terrier or miniature pom. Both are cute as a button, rather docile when breed properly, and a chick magnet! Have that on a leash and the women, if you're into them, will flock.

ummm. i dont wanna be a chick magnet. that would complicate my relationship with my male companion.

anyway, whoever made fun of my awesome dog fashion plans...i will not be dying his hair pink...but i like cute things. his name is going to be 'awesome baby rocket' and he's going to rule. i mean, my boyfriend won't let me dress him up in cute little outfits and smother him....i have to do it to someone.....i can compromise on the calmness as long as he's cute. price does not matter because im leaving korea f-ing loaded.

and hell to the yes ive been here too long. but its worth it when i ask my mom how much money i have in my us bank account.

im on serious flu medication . fuk.

Junior,
Love the pics. I've heard Oprah say numerous times that she looks like her dogs. OP...that's why I said "if you're into women". Seeeeeeee...I recognize awesome difference! Mr. Spock and Captain Kirk couldn't agree more!
