A Soldier hits a Korean ~ Mass hysteria with 90% of the nation attending candle light vigils demanding the withdrawal of all US forces from Korea. Also causing hyperactive reactionaries to attack any white foreigner they deem to be "GIs". Not to mention a bar on all Americans from entering traditional Korean restuarants and nightclubs.

A Korean hits a soldier~ A small column in the Stars and Stripes and no mention in the Korean media. The driver is not charged and if found, could face ONLY a 40,000won fine. No prison time, no trial, nothing.

Where's the equality that Koreans strive for?

Oh! I forgot!
Only equal if you're KOREAN! Mad

Well I hate to point out the obvious but if you are jay walking make sure you paint a big target on your back for moving vehicles. Funny how those corners all have those realllllly handy crossing lights.

Play with fire gonna get burned.

I'd say with many a Korean and foreigner alike, those who jaywalk are open game. Hell, I jaywalk, too but have yet to be struck in all my years.

It was a country road with no sidewalk. Though they were walking with traffic and not against traffic while the convoy passed them by.

90% of Koreans did not protest the middle school girl thing... and really, some dumb adult soldier is hit jaywalking does not compare with two middle school girls are CRUSHED to death by a giant military vehicle while walking home from school... there was no place for them to go, it was a 80-90% slope on the side of the road next to them, at least six feet high, no grab holds... it's not like they were playing in traffic.

Think she was killed on the same street and within a block of where the U.S. soldier was hit, come to think of it.

I am sure President Roh will offer his sympathy for the injuries to the U.S. soldier.

Bush Offers Condolences Over Death of S. Korean Woman
U.S. President George W. Bush expressed condolences on Friday to the family of a South Korean woman, who was killed by a U.S. military truck in a car accident on a road north of Seoul....
"I first want to express my country's deepest condolences for the accident that took place, where a U.S. military vehicle killed a Korean woman," he told Roh in front of the reporters. "And we send our deepest sympathies to the woman's families.

Hey, funny, link doesn't work anymore (almost feel like I'm back in China). Do you know another place that is talking about it? Do you know if it is just the site?

The US soldiers shouldn't be here in the first place, but they have to stay because the US caused the Korean War. It doesn't matter if a Korean goes haywire and willingly plows through a bunch of American high school students in Yongsan base with a dump truck. They shouldn't be here.

Because of that mentality, you aren't ever going to hear any condolences from young Korean nationalists.

However, I do agree that since the guy was jaywalking, you can't make much of a strong case out of it. There's no symbolism behind it like there was with Koreans who have been hit by Americans.

It's only polite to offer condolences in cases like these so Roh ought to, but this is hardly going to make the news in the US. On the other hand if 2 American school girls were crushed by Korean tanks in an accident then it would be reported, wouldn't it?

How are we supposed to fulfill our obligations under the Mutual Defense Treaty without stationing some troops here?
