I'm going to San Francisco for my foreign service interview/exam next wednesday and I decided to extend my trip over the weekend. So, I'm going to see the Chinese New Year celebration they have there, in America's most famous Chinatown.
I've only been to SFO once, in the summer. What's good to do in that city? I'll have 4 or 5 days, and my father is going to meet me there. And, how's the weather this time of year? |

Besides Chinatown, don't miss the Alcatraz tour run by the National Park Service. If there's no guided tour, rent the audio player to give you a much better experience.
Try the seafood at Fisherman's Wharf. Drink Anchor Steam on draught, ride the cable cars, drive down Lombard street. Be a tourist!
Oh and good luck on your interview! |

They also have the foreign service exam in Seoul.. I've taken it there once (where I met Dogbert). I also took it another time in Barcelona.
In regards to San Francisco.. North Beach.. Chinatown.. Fisherman's Wharf.. Lombord Street (world's most crooked street).. Haight-Ashbury.. Castro.. etc. |

I'm guessing he's taking the oral exam. It's about that time of year.
It's the wet season, so expect rain at least one of the days you're here. Average high is 55-60 degrees. Pretty pleasant on sunny days.
What to do in SF? What do you like? If you're into art at all, i'd suggest going to SFMOMA (museum of modern art). The building alone is pretty cool. yerba bueana gardens across the street is nice too.
Fisherman's wharf? It's ok. Pier 39 is 100% tourist trap.
Cable cars are fun but pricey now (5 bucks for a ride). If you decide to ride one, hop on in the middle so you don't have to wait in line.
If you're renting a car, going up and down a couple of the hills near lombard is fun. It's the only place I've driven where the hill is so steep that when you look straight ahead, all you see is another hill in the distance. Can't see the road in front of you for a brief moment, a bit errie.
What else? Like TB said, North beach. It's good place to eat and drink. Haight-Ashbury is all right. Mission is more low-key and down to earth.
If you want good chinese food, go to Yank Sing for dim sum. It kicks ass. Plenty of good restaurants in the city. |
