Well, my prepaid phone just ran out of airtime again tonight. It always seems to run out of time after 6pm on Saturday so that I can't get to a SK shop and top up my minutes until Monday. I've been using prepaid service for over 3 years now, and i've had about enough of these inconveniences.
I've heard that foreigners can now get monthly plan cell phone contracts. When I first went on prepaid 3 years ago there was no option for monthly plans for foreigners, at least that's what the phone shop rep told me. At any rate, i have heard of several foreigners getting monthly plan phones now.
Can anybody comment on what kind of rates you're getting? How many minutes and how much per minute? And did you have to sign a 1 year or 2 year contract? Or no contract?
Finally, I'm thinking of getting a new phone as well, if it isn't too expensive. I heard from another Dave's poster that he got a 40,000 won brand new phone with SK. Anybody have similar experiences?
Cheers for any help! |

Shop around.
You can get a new phone with a new number and a 3 month contract at different places. Phone start as low as 10k won with.
Monthly plans typically run 20k for average use. Mine is with LG and I can't remember the last time I went over 22k.
You can get a monthly plan with SK but you will need to place a security deposit of 250k won. This is refunded when you cancel your account.
You can get a plan with KTF but you will need a KOREAN credit card or a 250k deposit.
You can get a plan with LG and there is NO deposit BUT they require your banking information (copy of page 1 of your ACTIVE bank book), your passport and your ARC. I have had a plan account with LG since 2002 and have no complaints with billing or service.
Unless you get a discounted phone there is NO contract period. If you get a clearance phone and new number then you can expect a contract period of 3-6 months to pay for the phone.
One thing to note: There is a 55k won CONNECTION fee with any NEW plan account (with any provider). This is NOT the case with prepaid card phones. |

I am with KTF currently and got a free Show phone when I signed up for a three month contract.
I believe my activation fee was 30k at the time (approx. four months ago).
My monthly bills are approximately 20k each.
I found the deal at Homever.
Happy hunting! |

Sir,
LG looks like the best option since they don't require a deposit, but a few questions about LG:
How much was your phone? In the 50,000 range or the un-subsidized 400,000 price range? Re-reading your post, it seems if you pay 50K-ish for the phone you need a contract, is that right? Pay the retail price and there is no contract.
My guy just now said I needed a credit card for LG, maybe I'll go back and tell him to call HQ back and mention that a bank account is OK. |
