How old are you?
Are you married?
Do you have a boyfriend?
Have you had lunchie?
Could you sing a song for us?
I've been informed I might be helping with interviews for a new teacher and I can hardly wait. For a reading test I'd like to use a paragraph from Milton's Areopagitica, Foucault's What is an Author?, and a geneology from the Bible. Grammar will consist of identifying dangling constructions and changing from passive to active voice - something that Korean 'grammar' teachers seem completely unable to do. Then a few phonics tongue-twisters and a listening test based on an MP3 of Guns 'n Roses' Garden of Eden.
Well maybe I won't be quite that nasty but I'm sure I'll have fun with it. |

Don't worry too much. These interviews are more to test your accent and check to see if you can speak English. Other than that, if you have two legs you are fine. |

I've done about 20 interviews and I asked the same 5 questions for each.
Ask about family (brothers, sisters, where do they live)
Ask about education (where studied, major)
Ask about goals (future, short term)
Ask about classroom management (discipline, unruly students, activities)
Ask "Why did you choose to apply for this school?"
Finished...usually takes 5-15 minutes depending on the candidate.
I listen for pronounciation and speed more than the actual answers they give. |

Excellent starting point for an inverview!
I used roughly the same questions.
I also used a short, free-form conversation in English to see how confortable the applicant is with English.
I also sometimes asked about previous work experience and how it might help with this current job. |

Interviewer: "What do you think about drinking?"
Interviewee: "I don't know."
Interviewer: "How about a drink right now?" (while pulling out a bottle of scotch)
If the interviewee accepts a drink, hire them on the spot. It means that they're confident. |

Great approach for Korea - especially when I can just walk over to the staff room fridge and pull out a bottle of soju. |

umm yes we see you have quite the resume Mr. ummmm Chainsawman is it?
Yes sir, Mr. Chainsawman will do, or you can call me Dan.
We here at the International School of English Indoctrination believe in formality at the expense of the clients education.
Well that is good to know.
Yes, anyway is your skin white?
White enough for a hogwan.
Good you are hired. |

| Thanks. I asked because I have done a handful of them and the most recent from last week was a little difficult as conversation wasn't flowing well. I've never had a script so I figured I might prepare one or next time. |

Don't prepare a script! It's not that difficult. You could ask the capitol of any given/particular State in America. If no answer, then ask the capitol of another State.
If still no answer, then tell the Korean Teacher to name any capitol city of any State. If zero knowledge about any capitol city of any State in America is exemplified, then don't hire the applicant. |

What? They're teaching English, not American geography!
I agree that you shouldn't prepare a standard script. It should just be a casual conversation. If there's something on their resume that might make good conversation, then talk about that. If there is something that comes up in the conversation that catches your ear, ask them follow-up questions. Nothing shuts a person down more than unnecessary formality. |
