Hi,
I'm just curious what sort of monthly salary I should be hoping for/expecting in my first ESL job in Korea? I have a BA in English and I will have a Bachelor of Education. Any ideas or a ballpark figure?

Or an international school, if you've got an education degree.

Grotto's right - 2.0 should be an absolute minimum. Also be warned: if you have formal training in education, you may be especially appalled at how many hogwans are run.

International school would be great but usually require 2 years of experience. I've heard that with an Ed degree you can teach at Uni in Korea - any ideas or tips on how I would go about finding a position like that? Thanks for your help!

I seriously doubt that an education degree would be that big an advantage. It's also much more difficult for newbies to get uni gigs. An MA or something like a CELTA would be a much bigger advantage. There are a few jobs advertised on the job board for unis. If you want to apply for them get a log of packages ready with a good cover letter, notarised copies of your degree, letters of reference, and transcripts.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. The following is the BARE MINIMUM that any newbie should insist on, fresh of the plane, with no experience in Korea, if they are going to work in a kiddie hogwon:

2.0 million for 120 teaching hours/mo
free non-shared apartment
roundtrip airfare from and to the nearest international airport to your home
block shift (no more than 8 hours between your daily start and finish time, get that in writing)
health insurance, 50% of premium paid by you, 50% by employer
Monday-Friday schedule, NO SATURDAYS
2 weeks vacation
all national holidays off (no need to make them up)
any overtime is optional, paid at the rate of 120% of your standard hourly pay

With a BA in English and a B.Ed, you may have a little leverage to ask for more (maybe an extra hundred thousand a month or two), but don't expect the moon. Most hogwons aren't farsighted enough to consider quality teachers over cheap teachers.
