Has anyone noticed the prevalence of really good Korean cinema lately? With the recognition that Oldboy received at Cannes, the scathing political satire The Presidents Last Bang, and the oddball but extremely clever Save the Green Planet, I continue to be impressed on a regular basis. Are there any other titles out there that are worthwhile viewing? Color me interested.

I just returned from seeing Kings man at the Eland cinema. There are no English subtitles for those who will need them. The movie was a good representation of royal behavior in Koreas history. I would defiantly recommend you see it.

I hear Two Sa Bu Il Che ()is also good. (Again no subtitles)

Korean movies are great with some fantastic cinematography. What I don't understand is why that doens't tranlsate into good television.

Agree. Korean films often have tonal shifts that are mesmerizing, innovative plots and great cinematography---a truly unique palate when compared against anything else-be it hollywood, indy films, euro films or Japanese ones.

Also puzzled why the TV programs are so 1970's.

Unfortunately I need subtitles to catch the subtleties of Korean film. As far as TV dramas are concerned, I guess most of the talent goes into the film industry. On the other hand, has anyone noticed how amateurish a lot of North American soaps are as well? It doesn't seem to be a local phenomenon by any means.

Some Korean movies that I particularly like:

Sympathy for Lady Vengeance - ģ ھ - An elaborate tale of revenge about a woman who is forced to take the fall for a child murder she did not commit.

Bad Guy - - A grim movie about a woman forced into prostitution, or is it all fantasy?

Please Teach Me English - - A goofy romantic comedy about a man and a woman who are looking for love in their English take. A funny take on the English craze from a Korean perspective. (OK, this movie's kinda stupid, but it made me laugh)

JSA - The story of an unlikely friendship of North and South Korean border guards that goes horribly wrong.

Memories of Murder - ߾ - Based on the true story of a serial killer and the corrupt cops in charge of finding him.

This ...

... is the best Korean movie I've ever seen. It's called "Jeong," or My Heart.
If you can only see one Korean movie, make it this one.

Quote:
Like "Une Vie" by Guy de Maupassant, "My Heart" depicts the trouble-filled life of one woman. From the very beginning of the movie, which shows 16-year-old Soon-I's wedding ceremony to a child, viewers have a hunch that this woman is going to be unhappy and the movie will be very sad. And they would be right. Considering that the movie takes place between 1910 and 1960, when the country went through great economic difficulties, it's no wonder Soon-I's life is tough. However, as the movie goes on, viewers can amuse themselves with many unexpected humorous moments. The movie also provides a glimpse of every noteworthy aspect of Korean traditional way of life, such as pottery-making and marriage customs, and is filled with beautiful sound and images, as well as warm human relations. The movie drew awards from many international film festivals, including the Pusan International Film Festival.

(My apologies for the huge pictures. I don't know how to scale them down because I still don't understand this glowing box with the little people and pictures inside.)

Lately? It's been going on for about the last 4-5 years. Unfortunately, Korea is breaking with its bread 'n' butter: small films that rely on comedy or a novel story line and appealing talent. They've been trying to make the big block busters like Hollywood. I'm not sure that's a great direction.

Unfortunately, the Korean film market has not been able to achieve much penetration (tee hee) in Canadian video stores in the last four to five years. I am relatively new to Korean cinema and to the country as well, so my only real access to this cinema has been thru film fests and reviews in the Village Voice.
