Boy, I fried something in my laptop. I got to work, plugged in my PDA to the USB port and powered on my computer. When Windows just got loading, the computer's power went out. Zap. I thought maybe my motherboard went (Korean seem to call them "mainboards"). Luckily the A/S place is near my friend's work (although near the Nambu bus terminal which is a far jog from Nowon) and I was able to drag her to the Fujitsu A/S place with the promise of a free lunch (Burger King) in return for her expert Korean skillzors. It only took the service guy half an hour and he got it working.

My friend isn't very computer literate so her translation was a bit confusing but I gather he told her some chip got fried because of static electricity. If you have a lot of static on you and you plug in a USB device, you can zap something inside.

Fortunately, he fixed it for free (the laptop is under 1 year).

Anyway, during the balance of this cold dry winter, make sure you discharge your static before you plug in your USB devices.

Just touch something that's grounded.

If you have a PC that's plugged in then the metal case would work.

I haven't friend anything in Korea via static, but in Canada, I cooked the PS2 port totally from a static shock. Had to use a USB mouse after that.

I think I'll go to technomart/space 9 and see if they have any anti static pads. Static is "" in Korean I gather.
