I have a friend who is learning Korean. He asked for my advise since I have been studying for a long while and I passed the Korean Profieciency Test at a University level.

Since I was in the area, I thought I'd post this for anyone who is interested.

1. When you study, develop all areas: reading, writing, listening and
speaking. It is easy to leave one area out so make sure your study
habits cover all areas.

2. Do what you love. For me, I like dramas and comic books. When something is relevant and interesting you will learn more.

3. Use BUGSMUSIC.co.kr This site has free music with the lyrics.

4. Watch DRAMAS. There are several dramas that you can find online.
They cost a small fee. Big deal. They also have the scripts. Follow
along with the script. Don't get too bogged down in the details. My
favorite drama is OK-TAP-PANG-CO-YANG-E

5. There is an opinion section in every Korean news paper where
Koreans write in to talk about daily problems. The language is real
colloquial and the problems are sometimes funny, sometimes petty, but
they always give you an insight into Korean society.

6. In your Korean lessons ONLY USE KOREAN. I can't emphasize this enough.

7. Learn the Chinese character behind words. For instance has many
different meanings. It can mean water , it can mean number , it
can mean hand or it can mean guard .

Knowing the Chinese character can help you group words. Instead of
learning 50 random words, you can learn to recognize patters. By the
way, I am not talking about writing the character. Don't wast your
time. Just recognizing the meaning is enough.

8 For writing, making little projects for yourself. On my Korean
website I draw my own pictures and tell stories. On my Japanese
website I take pictures with my cell phone camera and write little
stories. In both these sites I made little writing projects for
myself by using pictures as a spring board.

9. Memorize words in groups. For instance, learn all eating words.
Then be sure to use to words in speaking and in writing.

10. Memorize sentence patterns. means, "when I went." means
go and means time. You can use this pattern many different ways.
when I though.., ̾߱ when I talked and so on.

With 20 or 30 different sentence patterns you will be able to say quite a bit.

11. Lastly, this is a great board if you have any questions:

Any chance of you typing some of those 20 or 30? Do all if you want. I need to move to the next level. I suppose at the moment I'm advanced beginner.
