Democracy is Dead!
Or at least in my country.
See, I compare recent events between my country (U.S.A.) and my cold neighbors to the north (Canada). Both countries recently learned about corruption scandals affecting the controlling party of their government. Now, my cold neighbors to the north did something smart. They got sick of the corruption and threw the bums out. My fellow citizens on the other hand....
Well, let's look at it. The Jack Abramoff payoffalloola is mostly about and affecting the Republicans. He himself was giving money to only Republicans, his (ahem) non profit groups were giving money to only Republicans, but how does the party in power spin it? They say that everyone is corrupt and that there is no difference between either party. So, in essence, they are saying that it doesn't matter. Guess what, Americans are lapping it up and believing it.
Now, the second amazing thing is the wiretapping. The NSA is spying on Americans without any form of warrants. Is this in violation of the law? Well, if you are able to read the law, why by golly, it is. Here's where it gets interesting. First, the President (and others) say "It's the Terrorist Surveillance Program" Yeah, that's it. They are spying on terrorists and have over a million reports from it. A million! Holy *beep*! We are truly fucked if there are that many in the U.S. Whether or not there are that many, the point is, the Republicans have done it again. By changing names and calling it the Terrorist Surveillance Program, they now can paint anyone against their ideas as being soft on security and for terrorism.Second, lest we forget, the master spinmeister himself, Karl Rove. Ol' Turd Blossom says that the Democrats have a pre-9/11 view of security unlike the good ol' Republicans. The Republicans are the party of safety and security, unlike those dirty, commie loving, (whoops, wrong war, terrorist loving) Democrats. Guess who the average American is going to follow?
So, in review, Republicans have screwed up royally, Democrats learn about it and fumble the ball, Republicans spin it so that they are correct, media sucks it up and then sprays it back out in talking head form, and my fellow citizens drink it all down.
As a prediction, I bet at the next election, the Republicans will not lose any seats, may even gain seats. Now, compare this to my quick and dirty summary of Canadian events. (By the way, an apology to Canadians for any and all inaccuracies in my summary. Just understand, it's not my fault, it's the terrorists.)
This is why I think my country is full of soft headed gap toothed morons. It's not because of the awful reality shows, nor is it because of the increasing popularity of manufactured pop music, nor is it because of the way they will blame all problems on someone else. It's not because they are showing an amazing lack of common sense over how their actions cause events. Though all of these do help add to the ever increasing feeling of retching that I get, the reason I think they are shambling, drooling, imbecilic fools is because of how quickly they will follow any demogogue no matter how trite and fake he is.
The summary is missing some events of Republican malfeasence, like Hurricane Katrina, Iraq, the budget deficit, etc. But the average American has forgotten it, and the summary pretty much plays out the same for all of these situations, personally.
Also, for the uber patriots, this is a rant. Yes, I know, I should love my country no matter what. Well, I happen to believe in tough love, y'know, the type where you smack your alcoholic uncle upside the head and say straighten out or else? Right now, that is what I would like to do to every one of my fellow citizens.

Abramoff is spilling the beans as we speak. Note how quiet this admin has been since he fessed up? And George W's minions insist he doesn't know the man.

Who said politics can't be fun Very Happy

As for the spying on US citizens, remember that an unchecked government which has too much power can commit crimes far greater than any individual.
