Another poster mentioned something about mandatory health insurance through NHIC. Health insurance was an option in my contract under some other insurer where I only had to pay 100,000 (half) to be insured for the year.

Does anyone have any more information on this? Would that be for teachers who started employment in January? Sounds strange since others may or may not have to pay back payments when they weren't even covered. My boss mentioned something and I just said "No" and ignored him. Hmmm.

It is mandatory now.

As to what you pay, that depends on what your employer says you are making.

Because of the amendment of the National Health Insurance Act on Jul. 13, 2005, without relation to the type of Status of Stay, all foreign workers and overseas Koreans who work for an workplace in Korea shall automatically be the employee insured since 1 January, 2006. If foreign workers made or will make their employment contract with their employer before 1 January, 2006, they will be the employee insured from 1 January, 2006, and if they will make the employment contract with their employer since 2 January, 2006, they will be the employee insured since the first date of employment.

Looks to me that I would have to make payments for January and February. My contract ends beginning of March. From the above, looks like they aren't asking for retroactive payments for 2005. That's a relief.

So let me get this straight. If someone signs a new contract sometime this year, they should automatically be insured under the Korean National Health Scheme? What if their boss doesn't want to sign them up?

I know for a fact that is optional, although with the vague angles of each jurisdiction, who knows?

Sounds to me like another thing that's mandatory according to law, but optional according to reality.

Same as everything else in this business. Shocked
