It's bo11ocks if you are a teacher and don't pay for rent/key money.
But having land is quite expensive.
Food, entertainment, transportation, dirt cheap. Things we don't deal with are rather expensive. |

You're right I suppose.
However, there's just no effin' way Korea is more expensive than England in terms of property prices, er, etc etc. I just refuse to believe it. |

That entire list looks a bit messed up...
Russia #3. That seems odd to me. Granted, I am quite ignorant on the matter though. |

where in England do you have to pay 30.000USD for deposit on a house for rent?
where in ENgland do you pay 200.000USD KEY MONEY on a business rental?
thats why Korea ranks the top!! because its a conspiracy, the land owners are in power in the government, they own the banks! they own the contruction companies etc.. BLAR BLAR BLAR.. they will do everything in their power to stop joe normal from getting ahead!!
you want to buy a house in korea?
ok you come up with 60-70% in cash and the bank will give you the 30?
HELLO!!!! so I should save my whole life 20-30 years to get 300.000 in cash while living expensese so I can one day by a 50pyung apartment...
the rich get rich here, and the rich will do everything in its power to keep it that way!! not much has changed from 500 years ago!!
some get ahead , get lucky etc.. but the majority of koreans.. are slaves to their own governments!!
they need middle class to stay middleclass! keep them paying! dont let them get ahead!!
Korea is a VERY VERY expensive country to own anything!
to live! sure dirt cheap! cup ramean, kimbab, shop at dongdaemun and drink soju.. bobs your uncle!!
buy a house, own a car! keep up with childs hakwons! because the governments want to keep it this way to keep familes in the red !!
its game over for you!! you will work your whole life and maybe own a home at the end of it.. and be able to let your son and his family live with you!!
KOREA IS A SLAVE DRIVEN NATION!!! |

I think it is likely close to accurate, but flawed.
Grocery stores in Korea are outrageously expensive. Fruit, veggies, grains and just about everything else is waaayyy overpriced. Rice is, on average, 5x the price of other nations. You can thank Korean mercantilism for this.
Land is very expensive, and speculation rampant. The city was not planned efficiently, which has lead to a misuse of land and the NK threat has caused rational property owners to tend south of the Han, to avoid the demolition of bridges should an invasion happen.
I think for us, it can seem cheap. We eat cheapish, low quality "food". Smokes are cheaper. Beer is comparable, as are some utilities. But this largest reason we may not understand the cost is that most of us get free housing.
But, I doubt Korea is #2, but I can't think of another place that would be comparable. |

I agree with what is being said.
At the same time, that website has a lot of errors. Check out the statistics from GDP per capita for the USA and Canada, then click on the North American sections and the numbers are not even close. I think there could be a lot more mistakes as well. |

I take your points, IG, even though the slave nation remark seems a bit of an exaggeration.
But seriously - England is disgracefully expensive in many respects. *beep* overpriced restaurants, ludicrous property prices, 30% tax (usually more), debt to banks/credit cards commonplace.
Where in Korea does it cost $250,000 for a small house that needs $50,000 spent on repairs in a truly sh1te part of town with crack addicts for nextdoor neighbours? Police officers, fire fighters, teachers - very difficult to afford a property for these types of people. And the ones that can are paying off a mortgage/interest until old age.
It's correct that groceries are overpriced in Korea as well. I shudder to think at how much 10 bags of shopping from Emart would cost. |

well lets start with the slave remark..
I guess what I mean is..
is that the very small percent of korea maybe 3% or 5% own the country
the majority of the land is owned by private holders, inherited wealth also.
governments officals control all the sectors, banks, business, apartments etc.. why does a small apartment in umm lets say ANSAN or suwon in a small neighbourhood around 36pyung cost 300,000 dollars?
WHY? becuase the government , land owners, minority rich people keep the prices inflated to ridiculous prices to insure the people struggle to make that price..
300.000 small apartment for a family to buy with no assistance from their family, will take an average man 10 years just to get the deposit if he saves 1 million won a month.. which is VERY hard!
that will only get him the depositm then he will spend the rest of his career paying off his house! not really being able to invest in a second house or get ahead.. not only because of the house.. but also the ridiculous amount of taxes for cars, fines, shopping, etc.. all these little things imposes on the people to insure they dont get to much to invest or perhaps become wealthy.. as I said of course some get lucky and break through and become rich due to hardwork or invention..
but also once that man becames rich he too will not want joe bloggs becoming rich, so he will impose large rent prices on his tenants!
he will ask for 200.000 KEY money.. so he can turn around and reinvest that money and become more rich..
its the owners using the slaves..
the slaves work half of their career to gather enough money to either pay KEY MONEY or a deposit on a house, to then give to another man to invest for himself to make him more rich...
slave driven means.. its a dog eat dog world here and the people at the top use the slaves (the common korean people) to insure their lively hood remains upperclass and superior to others.. last thing they want is to share their pool with common folk, and they will happen if these rediculous key money, deposits come down.. if those fees come down.
it will mean more common people will open businesses, buy land, buy houses , have spare money to invest, and over time will increase their wealth and maybe take away buildings, houses, lands from the already rich, and I dont think the masters want the slaves to do that..
slave driven... maybe a wrong choice of words.. but thats how governments have worked for thousands of years..
common peolpe are slaves to the government.. keep them repressed and that insures the wealthy their position on top.. |

Itaewon guy, I'm not disputing your figures because I've never looked into it, but I know a few people who I work with that either have or are about to buy a second property for investment.
These people aren't the super-elite-rich they're just middle class 9-5 type people. If they're in on this rental inflation conspiracy they haven't told me so- but then I suppose they wouldn't would they, the slave driving despots. |

Korea is insanely cheap. But I don't live in Seoul.
Even fruit. Mandarin oranges, strawberries and bananas are a fraction of the cost back home. Vegetables too if one is selective. Those things that cost more usually have easily substitutable options for one's diet.
And yeah, housing is expensive for those who pay for it and takes up a third of one's salary, on average, back home, and who knows what percentage here.
Having been to Japan three times, I find the comparison very misleading.
I can find an alright hotel in Seoul for 40,000 won. It's almost ten times that price for something comparable in Osaka. Taxis are five to eight times more expensive in Japan. And food two to five times more expensive in restaurants.
But that's as a tourist not "living" in the place. Still...
"Korea is an expensive place" is VERY misleading... absurd compared to Canada, Japan, New Zealand, etc. |

Obviously whoever made this survey has never been to another country. As already said, the only thing outstandingly expensive here is rent/land. Everything else is insanely cheap. Transportation, food, clothes, and so on. Everything but key money basically. |
