Ok, I'm sick-sick-sick of Windows. I'm gonna make a switch on my two notebooks to Linux. I have been reading about it, and have discovered that there are many versions of it (I am not very tech literate).

Which do you (if you know) suggest? Keep in mind I don't need any bells or whistles, as I only use my comps for web surfing and media. I would like as small an operating system as possible. Simple and straightforward to use.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Old computer: Pizza/Puppy Linux
Not old: SimplyMEPHIS

I like SimplyMEPHIS.

It is free to download, and works very well. You can try it off of the CD first, and it has an easy-to-install link that you can use to install it on your HD.

Ok, I will try Mepis, as it is apparently better for a laptop.

What prolems should I expect when using this system? Also, should I delete XP, or install both on my comp?

Thx.

What happened to push you over the edge? D'you get spywared, hijacked, or virused? ...'cause Windows XP by itself, has been reliably stable for me, and has never crashed since Service Pack 1 was released years ago.

I advise you to leave one of your notebooks as a Windows machine. Linux is not something you dive into head first. You should start by only getting your feet wet, and then just wading in the shallow end.

I know computer-science graduates who've used Linux for school and work for years, but still prefer WinXP as their everyday OS.

Surfing and e-mail will be easy with most Linux distributions, but many other types of activities won't be. Bare in mind that although Linux has a healthy community of developers and applications, you'll have to compile many of the programs yourself.

As others have said, before you do something drastic like install a Linux distro, try running different flavours off of bootable discs first. One should never dive into the Linux universe in a state of frustration.

Good luck!

You can play with that linux distro for a while from the CD, and then decide if you want to install it. There are instructions on how to do this online. If I recall, it said you should have your drive partitioned beforehand, or let Linux do it, but Linux wasn't recommended, as it wasn't particularly good at it or something.
