I literally have more than 2 small garbage cans full of coins. Mostly the 100 wons and then a lot of 500 won coins as well.

When I was here 3 years ago my bank used to let me bring in like 100,000 won worth of coins at a time or more in a big, unsorted mess inside a bag and they would take it and count it and deposit the money in my account later on in the day (about 3 hours later).

But since then I have not bothered (hence the crazy coin collection that just keeps growing). The Koreans at my office tell me I have to roll them like at back home. But I have no love for that idea.

Has anyone brought change to the bank recently? How was it handled?

At the KB bank there's a machine where you dump all the coins onto a conveyor belt and it will produce either cash or a deposit. Not sure if other banks have it, but I know at KB you need an account to use it.

Dude. When my lil coin pocket on my backpack starts getting heavy, I stop using my Tmoney card and feed the ticket machine.

Right. I don't understand people who can't seem to spend their coins. Didn't we have a thread here a while ago where some people seemed to think that putting all your coins in a big jar, then lugging that heavy-assed jar to the bank and going through whatever rigmarole the bank do, is actually a cool thing to do!!? I seem to remember posters saying it felt like "bonus" money or something. Like free money.

I spend those coins anytime I get a chance -- busses, subways, coffee machines, snack foods, street food...

it's almost like a psttime.

I have my change added to my Tmoney card. That way I get rid of the coins but still get the slightly reduced fare for using the card. They'll take coins as long as they're in multiples of W1,000. I don't imagine that they'd be too happy about a huge bag of coins, though.

I used to just spend all my coins, but basically what that entails is carrying around change with me everywhere I go. Every time I left the house, I'd have to make sure to bring some coins with me, otherwise it's inevitable that I'd get more coins as soon as I purchased something.

Basically, I feel like worrying with coins on a daily basis is more of a hassle than bringing a coffee mug-sized container to the bank once a month when I'm going there anyway.

I save mine and in fact if I have the change in my pocket to pay for something, I would rather use the W1,000 to pay for it and get the change. Sounds a bit nutty, but about every 6 months I go to the bank (if you seperate the coins they have machines there that will divide them up and roll them for you too) and cash in. My last purchase was an Ipod. I think of it as found money and a nice gift for myself.

I keep all my 100 won and below coins, I call it my handgun fund for when I go back to the states. The 500 won are for when I need a taxi and don't have won to pay before I get to the bank.

So can I bring my bucket O' mixed coins or not you think?

Do I have to separate them? Maybe I need to do a recon to the bank first and find out first hand. Blah. Two trips sucks.

I've always just taken them in. but you might want to seperate them into smaller batches so you don't piss the guys off. it'd probably be pretty hard to carry all those things anyways.

but how does a garbage bag hold all those coins? aren't they too heavy?

I wound up with $300 in change after two years from 2004-2005. It took more than one trip to the bank though. I had the coins in two or three different plastic bags and then put them in a tote bag for taking to the bank. I put all the coins together. Maybe they weren't too thrilled to see me coming.

I think it's going to look like a penny. They're coming out with a new 10K and a new 1K. I'm positive there will be no bill changer in Korea that will handle the new bills for the next two years. Have the subway machines started taking the new fiver?
