Check this out, peeps! Nalle Nalle (North Koreans' way of saying "bballi balli") is a North Korean cuisine take-out place in Hongdae. It was started up by a defector and is worth checking out.

Here's the feature story on the founder.

sounds interesting but if I went in there, all I'd be thinking about is whether he's wearing his "stamina underwear"

I didn't know they had food in North Korea. At least it will be a quick meal. You order something, they bring out some empty dishes and then you leave.

This reminds me of the time in college when my flatmate said, after I read aloud an article about the opening of a new Ethiopian restaurant: 'Ethiopian cuisine? I suppose they give you a dusty bowl and kick you back into the street to beg for food, harr harr!'

This was around the time of the Live Aid concerts, and although I did snicker, I felt very bad for doing it.

They sell some SK-friendly stuff. Some of the NK food I've had, stuff you'll never find in a restaurant south of the DMZ, is just plain bad.

I heard they eat lawn grass in N Korea. Do they have any lawn grass salad there?

They eat cold noodles. You can get that in a kalbi restaurant. I think it's those transparent noodles, but really thin. Had it only once. The practice is to put a lot of vinegar in/on it. I put some hot sauce in it and it was pretty good along with the vinegar. It's like North Korea's national dish or something. But don't quote me.

I was told that S.Korea's president was visiting and N.Korea's president had a bunch of noodles from said soup between his chopsticks and poured an outrageous amount of vinegar on them and said, "This is the only way to eat these".
