I recently went home, and it never occurred to me how nice my own people are! I had an Illinois state tooth booth operator that was just so cool. After being up some 20 hours, he chatted me up while cars were backing up behind me! I felt gross and in need of a shower, and here he was asking where I was from in Colorado (I had a rental w/Colorado plates). Then a little conversation ensued. Had the same guy driving back to O'hare, and he tells me I had the most dazzling smile he'd seen all day. Bless his heart. And no, he wasn't trying to score. He was a genuinely friendly people person, you know?
The girl at National car rental was a sweetie, too- she joked with me good-naturedly about my last name. Driving out of the lot, the rental papers flew out my hand as I was handing them to the gate person (Chicago wind~), and the guy in the car behind me got out and helped me retreive them.
At the post office, I carried a heavy box inside, and the guy who held the door open for me went out and got the other package from the open trunk, and he must've been in his late 60's. Not a light box, either!!
I really have a newfound appreciation for my people- I love you guys!! =) |

I had a similar experience when I went back to Canada. I rediscovered that Canadians aren't all whiny brats who think they're great because they say "eh." They only get that way after they leave the country.
There's something about foreigners in Korea, isn't there? It's a little...annoying. |

hmm i was thinking about this differently until you said that...
i went to nyc over my winter break...i was ASTOUNDED that the city with a reputation for being one of the meanest/uncaring was much nicer than seoul. i was offered seats quite a few times on the metro, and even being crowded, people had a certain respect for personal space. every EVERY time i was bumped into slightly, the person said sorry or pardon
...actually i even felt pretty embarrassed when i knocked into some guy's foot (when the car lurched)...he must have thought i was some prissy white girl who was too good to say sorry...so he stepped on my toe!!!! HARD!!!!
oh how i wish i could do that to these koreans sometimes... |
