With such a horribly repressive and repressed society, it'd do people a world of good to come off themselves and open up to sexuality.
Yeah, clicking on an "I'm over the age of 19" box will certainly prevent any kids from accessing content. What a load of pish.
This seems like a pathetic ploy, considering you can turn on the telly and watch soft core porn almost any day of the week.
Besides, as has been reported in the media, Koreans don't know how to use the Internet. They know how to play games and use portals, but they have no clue how to filter information content for validity or relevance.
The Korean nationalist agenda doesn't want Google to gain ground on Naver/Daum. Demonizing works well with an uninformed populace. Look how many Americans supported an illegal invasion of Iraq.

Despite all the right-wing howling over the last several years, there is no real evidence that porn leads to deviant behavior. The only bad result that could come of the youngsters getting their grubby little kimchi-stained mits on some western porn is that they'll be even more insecure about their willy size.
Google is just a tool. In and of itself, it is morally neutral. If you really want to get all fussy and this perverted behavior offends you so much, find out why it is that Korean kids "want" to search the seedy stuff.

This moreso reflects the sheer laziness of parents than anything else. They'd rather pawn the responsibility off on the schools instead of dealing with it themselves.

Not really. Korean portals use a different method of prioritization of search results and rely heavily on user FAQs. There was an article in the Korean Herald a week or so ago about the portal issue. The comments from Korean users pretty clearly illustrated that they don't know how to use the Internet, so they rely on portals to do the work for them. This also factors in with the government's criticisms that many Korean soldiers have insufficient Internet-savvy and only know how to play video games, which has prompted the government to invest in Internet education courses for soldiers.
You can clearly see the appeal of Naver and Daum to an intellectually challenged society. Lots of flash and plenty of links so that you don't have to look or bother with any of that 'information relevance' stuff.
It appears another version of the classic, "Go back to sleep Korea, your Internet portal is in control."

That'd be a form of nationalism.

You see, if nationalism weren't involved, you'd see less fanatical devotion to substandard support. Naver and Daum, being Korean companies, "are simply better" in the minds of Koreans. It has nothing to do with competence and everything to do with what they have been conditioned to enjoy. A similar example would be Samsung. With the company in constant legal trouble all over the world, Koreans still make it a nationalist issue to support Samsung/Hyundai/etc.
Whereas an ethical, competent Internet user wouldn't care where a service was based, and would use a rubric of competence. They don't rely on competence of Internet portals. They rely on their own incompetence.

Naver & Daum are admittedly better for information about Korea. Just as I go to Alberta.com if I want specific information about my home town. But there's a big, wide world outside of Korea too.
I have to agree with Hermes (this time!). It sounds more to me like a cheap shot at Google because it's successful. More information and less waiting for cheesy cartoon animations to load. I've seen my students look at enough girlie pictures on Daum--people are hypocrites if they think they're only available on Google or Yahoo.

I wonder if they count the sex education that goes on in many districts in the bible belt where it includes things like kissing will give you AIDS and/or make you pregnant.
