looking to expand my musical horizons. Been diggin into the jazz world quite a bit these days and always appreciate good tips on tasty albums. Some I would recommend:

Stanley Turrentine - Sugar
Freddie Hubbard - Red Clay
Gene Harris - Black and Blue
Alley Cats
Miles Davis - Kind of Blue
John Coltrane - Blue Train
Joey DeFrancesco - Live at the Five Spot

Naturally the list could go on and on....

Some trad jazzers may sneer, but for Jazz fusion I'd recommend Miles Davis' Bitch's Brew, Weather Report's Heavy Weather, Pat Metheny Group's Still Life Talking, and any UZEB album (preferrably a live one with Didier Lockwood making a guest appearance).

Anything Dave Brubeck but my favorites are Dave Digs Disney, Night Shift - Live at Blue Note, and of course, Time Out.

For something different, look into Charlie Hunter. Plays an eight string guitar (3 string bass, 5 string guitar) and does both lines simultaneously.

Diana Krall is fantastic and it's easy to find her albums in Korea.

ditto.

The same goes for his excellent Live/Evil album... but then Miles Davis went too far out in the late 70's with his newfound street ghetto/world beat grooving. Old school hip hop purists still dig that stuff but he lost me there.

Miles Davis was too cool for school.

and if you're going to get into Weather Report, and you definitely should, then you must get into Jaco Pastorious's solo stuff.

Don't forget Michael Brecker, if you like sax, Mike Stern or Alan Holdsworth for guitarists (besides Metheny and Scofield, already cited), and I'll throw in Stanely Clarke on bass.

I'll go a little off topic here and strongly recommend Steve Morse's The Introduction, esp. a tune called "Cruise Missile." He's a southern rocker, Ted Nugent-kind of guitarist but extremely sophisticated in his musicianship. He opened for DiMeola, McLaughlin, and Paco DeLucia when their acoustic gtr trio was doing amazing things on guitar -- and you should also check them out as well.

great suggestions....I can expand upon a few:

John Scofield: Works for Me
A Go Go (w/Medeski, Martin, and Wood)
Uberjam
Up All Night

Charlie Hunter (seen live twice, totally unreal to watch)
Bing, Bing, Bing

keep 'em coming....

Al DiMeola for guitar. There are few who are faster or smoother than he. In i don't think anyone with his speed is smoother. as well as being unbelievably fast he is also extremely skilled. some considered him the best guitarist alive coming out of the 70's.
The ulitimate for fusion guitarists is john McLaughlin. Unreal. check out Mahavishnu Orchestra.
Also check out Return to Forever. that was Chick Corea's fusion band.

Some of my favourite jazz albums in no particular order would have to be:

1) Midnight Blue - Kenny Burrell

2) The Sidewinder - Lee Morgan

3) Soul Station - Hank Mobley

4) Open Sesame - Freddie Hubbard

5) Round about Midnight - Miles Davis

6) Somethin' Else - Cannonball Adderley

7) Speak no evil - Wayne Shorter

Cool Sarah Vaughan with Clifford Brown (my favourite jazz vocal album by far. Her voice on this makes me melt)

9) Live at the village Vanguard - Sonny Rollins

Boney James
Bettye Lavette

Look them up on Amazon-many are jazz singers. Lighthouse is an incredible duo from England who broke up 2 years ago-their album Ocean Drive is an instant panty remover
